Abstract

Examples and variations of apparatus and Methods for concentrating solar radiation are disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. A concentrating solar energy collector comprising:

a) a heat collector located on or approximately on a rotational axis of the concentrating solar energy collector and extending between first and second ends of the concentrating solar energy collector;

a housing comprising:

1b) a first bracket extending longitudinally between first and second ends of the concentrating solar energy collector;

2b) first and second identical or substantially identical panels forming at least a portion of a wall of a housing, which housing extends between the first and second ends of the concentrating solar energy collector, the first and second panels being connected via the first bracket;

3b) a first reflector connected to a first side of said first bracket and offset from said wall and positioned within said housing to receive solar radiation and concentrate at least a portion of said solar radiation on said heat collector;

4b) a second reflector connected to a second side of said first bracket and offset from said wall and positioned within said housing;

5b) a second bracket extending longitudinally between first and second ends of the concentrating solar energy collector, said second bracket offset from and substantially parallel to said first bracket;

6b) a third bracket extending longitudinally between first and second ends of the concentrating solar energy collector, said third bracket offset from and substantially parallel to said first bracket;

7b) a first rib extending between the first and second brackets;

8b) a second rib extending between the first and third brackets; and

c) a first heat collector support having a first stanchion and a second stanchion supporting a first region of the heat collector;

wherein the first bracket has first and second notched portions for receiving portions of the first and second reflectors, respectively; the second bracket has a notched portion for receiving the first reflector; and the third bracket has a notched portion for receiving the second reflector;

wherein the first reflector is held in compression such that a surface of the first reflector is releasably forced against the first rib by the first notched portion of the first bracket and the notched portion of the second bracket, and the second reflector is held in compression such that a surface of the second reflector is releasably forced against the second rib by the second notched portion of the first bracket and the notched portion of the third bracket such that the compression of the first and second reflectors against the first and second ribs, respectively, shapes the first and second reflectors into substantially continuous curved portions; and

wherein the housing is pivotably mounted such that the housing is rotatable about the heat collector.

2. The collector of claim 1 further comprising third and fourth identical or substantially identical panels forming a portion of said housing.

3. The collector of claim 2 wherein the third and fourth panels are flat panels.

4. The collector of claim 2 comprising a third reflector and a fourth reflector, wherein the third reflector and the fourth reflector are identical and wherein the third reflector and the fourth reflector are elastically deformable flat reflectors in compression in said housing to provide curvature to the third and the fourth reflectors.

5. The collector of claim 3 comprising a third reflector and a fourth reflector, wherein the third reflector and the fourth reflector are identical and wherein the third reflector and the fourth reflector are elastically deformable flat reflectors in compression in said housing to provide curvature to the third and the fourth reflectors.

6. The collector of claim 1 wherein the first bracket has a length about equal or equal to a length of the first and second panels.

7. The collector of claim 2 wherein the first bracket has a length about equal or equal to a length of the first and second panels.

8. The collector of claim 5 wherein the first bracket has a length about equal or equal to a length of the first and second panels.

9. The collector of claim 6 wherein the bracket has notched portions to receive said first panel and said second panel.

10. The collector of claim 8 wherein the bracket is additionally configured to support one or more stanchions that support the heat collector.

11. The collector of claim 6 having third and fourth panels with, the second bracket joining the first and third panels and the third bracket joining the second and fourth panels, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth panels and the first, second, and third brackets have the same length.

12. The collector of claim 7 having third and fourth panels with, the second bracket joining the first and third panels and the third bracket joining the second and fourth panels, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth panels and the first, second, and third brackets have the same length.

13. The collector of claim 8 having third and fourth panels with, the second bracket joining the first and third panels and the third bracket joining the second and fourth panels, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth panels and the first, second, and third brackets have the same length.

14. The collector of claim 10 having third and fourth panels with, the second bracket joining the first and third panels and the third bracket joining the second and fourth panels, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth panels and the first, second, and third brackets have the same length.

15. The collector of claim 1 further comprising a second heat collector support having a third stanchion and a fourth stanchion supporting a second region of the heat collector distant along the heat collector from the first stanchion.

16. The collector of claim 1 further comprising a pivot assembly having a bearing assembly for rotation of the reflector and the first and second panels about the heat collector.

17. The collector of claim 16 wherein the bearing assembly is a split bearing assembly.

18. The collector of claim 16 wherein the heat collector passes through an end cap of the concentrating solar energy collector and flanges of the pivot assembly.

19. The collector of claim 1 wherein the concentrating solar energy collector is rotatable a sufficient amount that the concentrating solar energy collector tracks the sun's position during the day and faces the ground at night.
