Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a transmitter, a receiver and methods of operating a transmitter and a receiver. In one embodiment, the transmitter has at least three transmit antennas and includes a feedback decoding portion configured to recover at least one group-based channel quality indicator provided by a feedback signal from a receiver, wherein each group-based channel quality indicator corresponds to one of a set of transmission layer groupings. The transmitter also includes a modulator portion configured to generate at least one symbol stream and a mapping portion configured to multiplex each symbol stream to at least one transmission layer grouping. The transmitter further includes a pre-coder portion configured to couple the transmission layers to the transmit antennas for a transmission. The receiver includes a decoder portion which is configured to use decoded signals from at least one group to decode the other groups.

Claims (40)

1. A transmitter having at least three transmit antennas, comprising:

a feedback decoding portion configured to recover at least one group-based channel quality indicator provided by a feedback signal from a receiver, wherein each group-based channel quality indicator corresponds to one of a set of transmission layer groupings;

a modulator portion configured to generate at least one symbol stream;

a mapping portion configured to multiplex each symbol stream to at least one transmission layer grouping; and

a pre-coder portion configured to couple the transmission layers to the transmit antennas.

2. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the feedback decoding portion is further configured to recover at least one transmission layer index based on the at least one group-based channel quality indicator.

3. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the feedback decoding portion is further configured to recover at least one index of transmission layer grouping based on the at least one group-based channel quality indicator.

4. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the mapping portion provides a three-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of one or two groups for three transmit antennas.

5. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the mapping portion provides a four-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of two asymmetrical groups for four transmit antennas.

6. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the mapping portion provides a four-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of two symmetrical two-layer groups for four transmit antennas.

7. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the pre-coder portion is configured to provide a time-variant pre-coder matrix in response to a feedback signal from the receiver.

8. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the pre-coder portion is configured to provide a group permutation pre-coding codebook.

9. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the pre-coder portion is configured to provide a grouping-based codebook.

10. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the pre-coder portion is configured to provide a pre-coding, codebook that is constructed by multiplying at least one base matrix with each permutation matrix from a group permutation pre-coding codebook.

11. The transmitter as recited in claim 1 wherein the pre-coder portion is configured to provide a pre-coding codebook that is constructed by multiplying at least one base matrix with each grouping matrix from a grouping-based codebook.

12. A transmitter having at least three transmit antennas, comprising:

a feedback decoding portion configured to recover at least one group-based channel quality indicator provided by a feedback signal from a receiver, wherein each group-based channel quality indicator corresponds to one of a set of transmission layer groupings;

a modulator portion configured to generate at least one symbol stream;

a mapping portion configured to multiplex each symbol stream to at least one transmission layer grouping, wherein the mapping portion provides an explicit grouping or a default grouping for a transmission layer grouping of at least two groups; and

a pre-coder portion configured to couple the transmission layers to the transmit antennas.

13. A method of operating a transmitter having at least three transmit antennas, comprising:

recovering at least one group-based channel quality indicator provided by a feedback signal from a receiver, wherein each group-based channel quality indicator corresponds to one of a set of transmission layer groupings;

generating at least one symbol stream;

multiplexing each symbol stream to at least one transmission layer grouping; and

coupling the transmission layers to the transmit antennas.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 further comprising recovering at least one transmission layer index based on the at least one group-based channel quality indicator.

15. The method as recited in claim 13 further comprising recovering at least one index of transmission layer grouping based on the at least one group-based channel quality indicator.

16. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the multiplexing provides a three-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of one or two groups for three transmit antennas.

17. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the multiplexing provides a tour-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of two asymmetrical groups for four transmit antennas.

18. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the multiplexing provides a four-layer transmission having a transmission layer grouping of two symmetrical two-layer groups for four transmit antennas.

19. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the coupling provides a transmission employing a time-variant pre-coder matrix in response to a feedback signal from the receiver.

20. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the coupling provides a transmission employing a group permutation pre-coding codebook.

21. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the coupling provides a transmission employing a grouping-based codebook.

22. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the coupling provides a transmission employing a pre-coding codebook that is constructed by multiplying at least one base matrix with each permutation matrix from a group permutation pre-coding codebook.

23. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the coupling provides a transmission employing a pre-coding codebook that is constructed by multiplying at least one base matrix with each grouping matrix from a grouping-based codebook.

24. A method of operating a transmitter having at least three transmit antennas, comprising:

recovering at least one group-based channel quality indicator provided by a feedback signal from a receiver, wherein each group-based channel quality indicator corresponds to one of a set of transmission layer groupings;
