Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for anchoring suture to bone. In one exemplary embodiment, a cannulated suture anchor is provided and it includes a suture-engaging member formed therein and configured to receive a suture therearound such that trailing ends of the suture can extend through the suture anchor. The suture anchor can also include at least a proximal portion having dual threads to facilitate engagement with bone. The present invention also provides exemplary sutures and drivers that can be used with the various methods and devices disclosed herein, or with other methods and devices known in the art.

Claims (43)

1. A method for anchoring suture to bone, comprising:

coupling a suture to a suture anchor such that the suture extends around a suture-engaging member formed in a distal portion of the suture anchor and trailing ends of the suture extend through an inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of a proximal end of the suture anchor;

inserting a driver into the proximal end of the suture anchor; and

rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into a bone hole to anchor the suture to the bone, the suture anchor including first and second threads that are spaced axially apart from one another and that have the same pitch such that the first and second threads simultaneously cut independent paths through bone;

wherein the suture anchor includes an opening formed through a sidewall thereof and extending around a distal-most tip of the suture anchor entirely distal to the first and second threads such that fluid can flow through the opening and into the inner lumen of the suture anchor when the suture is anchored to the bone.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second threads are formed on at least a proximal portion of the suture anchor such that the first and second threads engage cortical bone.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first thread engages cortical and cancellous bone.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second threads engage cortical and cancellous bone.

The method of claim 1 , wherein three sutures are coupled to the suture anchor such that the three sutures extend around the suture-engaging member formed in the distal portion of the suture anchor and trailing ends of the sutures extend through the inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of the proximal end of the suture anchor.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising securing tissue to the bone using the suture.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a terminal distal end of the second thread is proximal to a terminal distal end of the first thread such that the first thread cuts through bone prior to the second thread cutting through bone.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second threads have a same length such that rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into a bone hole causes the first and second threads to simultaneously start cutting through bone.

9. A method for anchoring suture to bone, comprising:

coupling a suture to a suture anchor such that the suture extends around a suture-engaging member formed in a distal portion of the suture anchor and trailing ends of the suture extend through an inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of a proximal end of the suture anchor;

inserting a driver into the proximal end of the suture anchor; and

rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into a bone hole to anchor the suture to the bone, the suture anchor including first and second threads that are spaced axially apart from one another and that have the same pitch such that the first and second threads simultaneously cut independent paths through bone;

wherein the suture anchor includes a cut-out extending through opposed sidewalls thereof and extending around a distal-most tip thereof such that fluid can flow through the cut-out and into the inner lumen of the suture anchor;

wherein a terminal distal end of the second thread is proximal to a terminal distal end of the first thread such that the first thread cuts through bone prior to the second thread cutting through bone; and

wherein the terminal distal end of the first thread is just proximal to a proximal end of the cut-out.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first and second threads are formed on at least a proximal portion of the suture anchor such that the first and second threads engage cortical bone.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first thread engages cortical and cancellous bone.

The method of claim 9 , wherein three sutures are coupled to the suture anchor such that the three sutures extend around the suture-engaging member formed in the distal portion of the suture anchor and trailing ends of the sutures extend through the inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of the proximal end of the suture anchor.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising securing tissue to the bone using the suture.

14. A method for anchoring suture to bone, comprising:

coupling a suture to a suture anchor such that the suture extends around a suture-engaging member formed in a distal portion of the suture anchor, the suture-engaging member being positioned within an inner lumen extending through the suture anchor, and trailing ends of the suture extending through the inner lumen and out of a proximal end of the suture anchor;

inserting a driver into the proximal end of the suture anchor; and

rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into a bone hole to anchor the suture to the bone, the suture anchor including first and second threads that are spaced axially apart from one another and that have the same pitch such that the first and second threads simultaneously cut independent paths through bone;

wherein the suture anchor includes an opening formed through a sidewall and extending around a distal-most tip thereof such that fluid can flow through the opening and into the inner lumen of the suture anchor;

wherein the first and second threads have a same length such that rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into a bone hole causes the first and second threads to simultaneously start cutting through bone; and

wherein a terminal distal end of the first thread is just proximal to the suture-engaging member when the driver is rotated to thread the suture anchor into the bone hole such that the suture-engaging member enters the bone hole before the first thread cuts through bone.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first and second threads are formed on at least a proximal portion of the suture anchor such that the first and second threads engage cortical bone.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first thread engages cortical and cancellous bone.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein three sutures are coupled to the suture anchor such that the three sutures extend around the suture-engaging member formed in the distal portion of the suture anchor and trailing ends of the sutures extend through the inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of the proximal end of the suture anchor.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising securing tissue to the bone using the suture.

19. A method for anchoring suture to bone, comprising:

positioning a suture around a suture-engaging member of a suture anchor such that trailing ends of the suture extend through an inner lumen extending through the suture anchor and out of a proximal end of the suture anchor, and such that a mid-portion of the suture between the trailing ends is seated in a suture-seating groove in an open distal-most tip of a non-threaded distal portion of the suture anchor, the suture anchor having a threaded proximal portion that is a single unit with the non-threaded distal portion, a first thread extending around the suture anchor over an entire length of the threaded proximal portion, and a second thread extending around the suture anchor over only a proximal portion of the threaded proximal portion, the non-threaded distal portion having the suture-engaging member formed therein;

inserting the suture anchor into a bone hole such that the threaded proximal portion of the suture anchor cuts into bone after the non-threaded distal portion is inserted into the bone hole; and

wherein the first thread engages cancellous bone and cortical bone, and the second thread engages cortical bone.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein inserting the suture anchor into a bone hole comprises:

inserting a driver into the proximal end of the suture anchor; and

rotating the driver to thread the suture anchor into the bone hole.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the first thread engages cortical bone before the second thread engages cortical bone.

22. The method of claim 19 , wherein the suture anchor includes an opening formed in a sidewall of the suture anchor in the non-threaded distal portion thereof such that fluid can flow through the opening and into the inner lumen of the suture anchor when the suture anchor is threaded into the bone hole.
