Abstract

Systems and methods for disposing and supporting a solar panel array are disclosed. In one embodiment, a system for supporting a solar panel array includes the use of support columns and cables suspended between the support columns, with the solar panels received by solar panel receivers that are adapted to couple to the cables. The solar panel array may then be used to provide power as well as shelter. Cooling, lighting, security, or other devices may be added to the solar panel array.

Claims (16)

1. A system for supporting a solar panel array across a natural gap to include a valley, comprising:

at least four anchors;

a first support cable extending between and directly connected to a first anchor and a second anchor;

a second support cable extending between and directly connected to a third anchor and a fourth anchor;

a number of solar panels;

one or more panel receivers, each panel receiver adapted to receive the number of solar panels, and wherein the panel receiver comprises a number of curved struts and a number of horizontal struts connected to the curved struts with moment connections.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the first cable and the second cable are generally parallel in their axial directions.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the first anchor and the second anchor are spaced apart a first distance and the third anchor and the fourth anchor are spaced apart the first distance.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the first anchor and the third anchor are spaced apart a second distance and the second anchor and the fourth anchor are spaced apart the second distance, wherein the second distance is different than the first distance.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the distance above a valley floor varies along a length of the cables.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the panel receiver further comprises:

a number of center struts attached near the middle of the curved struts; and

a number of cable trusses having a first end and a second end, the cable trusses being connected at the first end to one end of a curved strut and at the second end to an opposite end of the same curved strut;

wherein the cable trusses are secured between the first end and the second end to the center struts.

A system for supporting a solar panel array, the system comprising: first, second, third and fourth anchor points; a first support cable suspended between the first and second anchor points; a second support cable suspended between the third and fourth anchor points; and a plurality of solar panel receivers each adapted to receive a solar panel, the solar panel receivers being secured to the first support cable and the second support cable; and wherein each panel receiver includes a number of curved struts and a number of horizontal struts connected to the curved struts.

The system of claim 7 wherein each panel receiver further comprises a number of center struts attached near the middle of the curved struts; and a number of cable trusses having a first end and a second end, the cable trusses being connected at the first end to one end of a curved strut and at the second end to an opposite end of the same curved strut; wherein the cable trusses are secured between the first end and the second end to the center struts.
