Abstract

The invention relates to a use of a duplex steel for the production of an armouring layer of a flexible pipe comprising at least one unbonded armouring layer and at least one unbonded sealing layer wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent 0.01-0.05% by weight of carbon (C) at least 0.15% by weight of nitrogen (N) 20.0-23.0% by weight of chromium (Cr) up to 3.0% by weight of nickel (Ni) up to 1.0% by weight of molybdenum (Mo) 3-6% by weight of manganese (Mn) up to 1.0% by weight of copper (Cu) incidental impurities and balance being iron (Fe).

Claims (51)

1. A method of producing a flexible pipe comprising at least one unbonded armouring layer, at least one unbonded sealing layer comprising an internal sealing layer and comprising an inner armouring layer (carcass) inside the internal sealing layer, the method comprising:

producing the inner armouring layer from a duplex steel wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent:

0.01-0.05% by weight of carbon (C);

at least 0.15% by weight of nitrogen (N);

20.0-23.0% by weight of chromium (Cr);

up to 3.0% by weight of nickel (Ni);

up to 1.0% by weight of molybdenum (Mo);

3-6% by weight of manganese (Mn);

up to 1.0% by weight of copper (Cu);

incidental impurities; and

balance being iron (Fe).

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 0.02 and 0.04% by weight of carbon.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent at least 0.18% by weight of nitrogen.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 21.0 and 22.0% by weight of chromium.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent less than 2.0% by weight of nickel.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent up to 0.6% by weight of molybdenum.

7. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 4.0 and 5.5% by weight of manganese.

8. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent up to 0.6% by weight of copper and incidental impurities in an amount of up to 1% by weight in total.

9. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 66 and 76% by weight of iron.

10. A flexible pipe comprising:

at least one unbonded armouring layer, least one unbonded sealing layer comprising an internal sealing layer and comprising an inner armouring layer (carcass) inside the internal sealing layer, wherein the inner armouring layer of the flexible pipe is of a duplex steel having the composition in weight percent:

0.01-0.05% by weight of carbon (C);

at least 0.15% by weight of nitrogen (N);

20.0-23.0% by weight of chromium (Cr);

up to 3.0% by weight of nickel (Ni);

up to 1.0% by weight of molybdenum (Mo);

3-6% by weight of manganese (Mn);

up to 1.0% by weight of copper (Cu);

incidental impurities; and

balance being iron (Fe).

11. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel has 40-70% by weight of austenite and 30-60% by weight of ferrite.

12. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 0.02 and 0.04% by weight of carbon.

13. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent at least 0.18% by weight of nitrogen.

14. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 21.0 and 22.0% by weight of chromium.

15. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent less than 2.0% by weight of nickel.

16. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent up to 0.6% by weight of molybdenum.

17. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 4.0 and 5.5% by weight of manganese.

18. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent up to 0.6% by weight of copper and incidental impurities in an amount of up to 1% by weight in total.

19. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the duplex steel comprises in weight percent between 66 and 76% by weight of iron.

20. The flexible pipe as claimed in claim 10 wherein the inner armouring layer of duplex steel is made from wires or strips, which have been wound.

21. A method of transportation of aggressive and corrosive hydrocarbon fluids at deep water, comprising transporting the hydrocarbon fluids from a depth of at least 1000 meters in a flexible pipe comprising:

at least one unbonded armouring layer and at least one unbonded sealing layer comprising an internal sealing layer and comprising an inner armouring layer (carcass) inside the internal sealing layer, wherein the inner armouring layer of the flexible pipe is of a duplex steel having the composition in weight percent:

0.01-0.05% by weight of carbon (C);

at least 0.15% by weight of nitrogen (N);

20.0-23.0% by weight of chromium (Cr);

up to 3.0% by weight of nickel (Ni);

up to 1.0% by weight of molybdenum (Mo);

3-6% by weight of manganese (Mn);

up to 1.0% by weight of copper (Cu);

incidental impurities; and

balance being iron (Fe).
