Abstract

This document provides methods and materials related to treating liver conditions. For example, the methods and materials relating to the use of cAMP inhibitors to treat liver conditions are provided.

Claims (23)

1. A method for inhibiting cyst growth, said method comprising:

(a) identifying liver tissue comprising a liver cyst, and

(b) contacting said liver cyst with a cAMP inhibitor, wherein the cAMP inhibitor is somatostatin, ocetreotide, lanreotide, vapreotide, ursodeoxycholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid or gastrin, under conditions wherein the growth rate of said liver cyst is reduced as compared to the growth rate of a comparable liver cyst not contacted with said cAMP inhibitor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said liver tissue is human liver tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method comprises orally administering said cAMP inhibitor to said mammal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method comprises injecting said cAMP inhibitor into said mammal.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method comprises detecting a reduced growth rate of said liver cyst following said contacting step.

6. A method for inhibiting cyst growth, said method comprising:

(a) identifying liver tissue comprising a liver cyst having a growth rate, and

(b) contacting said liver cyst with a cAMP inhibitor, wherein the cAMP inhibitor is somatostatin, ocetreotide, lanreotide, vapreotide, ursodeoxycholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid or gastrin, under conditions wherein said growth rate of said liver cyst is reduced.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said liver tissue is human liver tissue.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein said method comprises orally administering said cAMP inhibitor to said mammal.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein said method comprises injecting said cAMP inhibitor into said mammal.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein said method comprises detecting a reduced growth rate of said liver cyst following said contacting step.

11. A method for inhibiting cyst growth in a mammal, said method comprising:

(a) identifying said mammal as having liver tissue comprising a liver cyst, wherein said liver cyst has a size, and

(b) administering a cAMP inhibitor, wherein the cAMP inhibitor is somatostatin, ocetreotide, lanreotide, vapreotide, ursodeoxycholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid or gastrin, to said mammal in an amount and at a frequency effective to prevent said size from increasing more than 100 percent within a two month time period.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said mammal is a human.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein said cAMP inhibitor is formulated as a slow-release cAMP inhibitor.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein said administering step is effective to prevent said size from increasing more than 50 percent within a six month time period.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein said administering step is effective to prevent said size from increasing more than 25 percent within a six month time period.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein said administering step is effective to prevent said size from increasing more than 100 percent within a 12 month time period.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein said method comprises determining whether said size increased more than 100 percent within a 36 month time period.
