Abstract

A structural adhesive tape includes a closed cell silicone foam support and a structural adhesive composition on opposing sides of the closed cell silicone foam support. The structural adhesive composition may be a condensation reaction curable pressure sensitive adhesive composition. The structural adhesive tape is useful in structural glazing applications, such as curtain wall applications.

Claims (62)

1. A curtain wall unit comprising:

(a) a frame member,

(b) a curtain wall panel, and

(c) a structural adhesive tape comprising

(i) a silicone foam support,

(ii) a structural adhesive composition applied on opposing sides of the silicone foam support,

where the structural adhesive tape is interposed between the frame member and the curtain wall panel and structurally attaches the curtain wall panel to the frame member; and

where the structural adhesive composition is a condensation reaction curable pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprising:

(A) a bodied MQ resin comprising

(i) a resinous core and

(ii) a nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group, where the nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group is terminated with a silicon-bonded hydroxyl group;

(B) a treated MQ resin, where (B)/(A) ratio has a value of 0.3 to 5.0, and

(C) a polydiorganosiloxane terminated with a condensation reactable group;

where resin/polymer ratio has a value of 2.0 to 3.0;

(D) a crosslinker; and

(E) a catalyst.

2. The unit of claim 1 , where the silicone foam support is a closed cell silicone foam.

3. The unit of claim 1 , where the silicone foam support is a closed cell silicone foam extrusion.

4. The unit of claim 1 , where the silicone foam support is a foam sheet.

5. The unit of claim 1 , where the structural adhesive composition is a condensation reaction curable structural silicone composition.

6. A method comprising using in a structural attachment application, a structural adhesive tape comprising:

(I) a silicone foam support, and

(II) a condensation reaction curable pressure sensitive adhesive composition applied on opposing sides of the silicone foam support, where the pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprises

(A) a bodied MQ resin comprising

(i) a resinous core and

(ii) a nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group, where the nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group is terminated with a silicon-bonded hydroxyl group;

(B) a treated MQ resin, where (B)/(A) ratio has a value of 0.3 to 5.0, and

(C) a polydiorganosiloxane terminated with a condensation reactable group; where resin/polymer ratio has a value of 2.0 to 3.0;

(D) a crosslinker; and

(E) a catalyst.

7. The method of claim 6 , where the silicone foam support is a closed cell silicone foam.

8. The method of claim 6 , where the silicone foam support is a closed cell silicone foam extrusion.

9. A method comprising:

(1) applying a composition to opposing sides of a silicone foam support, where the composition comprises

(A) a bodied MQ resin comprising

(i) a resinous core and

(ii) a nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group, where the nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group is terminated with a silicon-bonded hydroxyl group;

(B) a treated MQ resin, where (B)/(A) ratio has a value of 0.3 to 5.0, and

(C) a polydiorganosiloxane terminated with a condensation reactable group; where resin/polymer ratio has a value of 2.0 to 3.0;

(D) a crosslinker;

(E) a catalyst; and

(F) a solvent;

where the composition is applied on each opposing side in an amount sufficient to provide on each opposing side a layer having a thickness of at least 3 mils after removal of component (F), and

(2) removing component (F) until each layer is not tacky to touch.

10. A pressure sensitive structural adhesive tape prepared by the method of claim 9 .

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

(3) interposing the product of step (2) between surfaces,

(4) applying pressure to the product of step (2),

(5) curing the layers.

12. A kit comprising:

(I) a structural adhesive composition,

(II) a closed cell silicone foam support, and

(III) an instruction set explaining how to apply component (I) to component (II) to prepare a tape and how to use the tape in a structural glazing application;

where the structural adhesive composition is a pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprising:

(A) a bodied MQ resin comprising

(i) a resinous core and

(ii) a nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group bonded to the core, where the nonresinous polyorganosiloxane group is terminated with a silicon-bonded hydroxyl group;

(B) a treated MQ resin, where (B)/(A) ratio has a value of 0.3 to 5.0, and

(C) a polydiorganosiloxane terminated with a condensation reactable group;

where resin/polymer ratio has a value of 2.0 to 3.0;

(D) a crosslinker; and

(E) a catalyst.
