Abstract

An elongated, flexible polymer gasket includes a body formed by a length of tubular flexible polymer material, a hollow chamber within the body extending uniformly the length of the body, and a plurality of individual openings spaced apart from one another along the length of the body. The gasket further includes a plurality of individual spring clip fasteners, each formed of a metal wire, the length of wire being bent to form an elongated, generally planar base portion with opposing major sides and an elongated, engagement portion extending transversely away from one of the opposing major sides. The maximum width dimensions of the base and engagement portions being greater than a maximum nominal dimension of the opening whereby the each individual spring clip member is captured in a separate one of the openings with the base portion within the hollow chamber and the engagement portion projecting traversely away from the base portion and the body.

Claims (13)

1. A method of making an elongated, flexible gasket comprising the steps of:

providing an elongated flexible body formed by a length of tubular polymer material, the body including an outer wall of the polymer material at least partially surrounding and at least partially defining a hollow chamber within the body extending uniformly in cross sectional shape and dimension along the length of the body;

providing a plurality of individual openings spaced apart from one another along the length of the body passing through the outer wall and into the hollow chamber; and

inserting into each opening, a generally planar base portion of one of a plurality of individual spring clip fasteners such that the base portion of each fastener is captured within the hollow chamber and an engagement portion of each fastener extends out of the body and transversely away from the base portion, and away from the opening and the outer wall of the body, each spring clip fastener is formed by a length of metal wire at least partially hardened for resiliency and having a rounded cross-section and being bent to form the base and engagement portions, the base portion of each individual spring clip fastener having a maximum length dimension in an elongated direction of the base portion and a maximum width dimension in a direction at least generally perpendicular to the elongated direction and length dimension, the maximum width dimension being smaller than the maximum length dimension, the base portion of each spring clip fastener having two opposing longer sides longer in length than a maximum cross sectional dimension of the hollow chamber and two opposing shorter ends connecting the longer sides, at least one of the shorter ends being curved, the engagement portion of each individual spring clip fastener having a maximum length dimension in an elongated direction of the engagement portion at least transverse to the elongated direction of the base portion, and a maximum width dimension less than the maximum length dimension of the engagement portion in a direction at least generally perpendicular to the elongated direction of the engagement portion, the maximum width dimension of the base portion and the maximum width dimension of the engagement portion each being greater than a maximum nominal dimension of the opening and the engagement portion having a proximal end abutting the base portion with a reduced width dimension less than the maximum width dimensions of the engagement portion and the base portion.

2. The flexible polymer gasket with spring clip fasteners made by the method of claim 1 .

3. The flexible polymer gasket made by the method of claim 1 wherein the flexible polymer material is a silicone material.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed by a tubular extrusion of an elastomeric polymer material, and wherein the step of inserting further comprises the steps of:

inserting one curved shorter end of a separate one of the individual spring clip fasteners into one of the openings to stretch the elastomeric material sufficiently to fully receive the one curved end of the spring clip fastener;

stretching the opening further with the spring clip fastener in the elongated direction of the body and inserting the base portion into the stretched opening until the entire base portion is received with the hollow chamber; and

permitting the elastomeric material of the body to relax whereby the opening returns towards it original size such that the base portion remains captured within the hollow chamber while the engagement portion of the spring clip fastener is exposed outside the body extending away the base portion and from the opening and the body.

5. The flexible polymer gasket with spring clip fasteners made by the method of claim 4 .

6. The flexible polymer gasket wherein the elastomeric material is a silicone material as made by the method of claim 5 .

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the maximum length of the base portion is at least twice and great as the maximum width of the base portion, wherein the engagement portion of each individual spring clip fastener is generally centered on the base portion centrally between the two opposing longer sides and the two opposing shorter ends and wherein the step of stretching comprising stretching the opening in an elongated direction of the flexible body to fully insert the base portion into the hollow chamber a distance greater than the opening is stretched transversely by inserting the one curved shorter end of the spring clip fastener in the opening.
