Surgical instrument docking device
Described herein is a surgical instrument that includes a tubular member having first and second opposite ends and a longitudinal axis, an instrument dock extending from the first end of the tubular member that includes an opening for receiving a rod, and a light source. Light from the light source is directed out of the opening in the instrument dock. In a preferred embodiment, the article of manufacture includes a nose cone and a tail cone that actuates the light source.
1. A lighting device for use in plastic surgery, the lighting device comprising:
a. a tubular member having first and second opposite ends and defining a longitudinal axis,
b. an instrument dock located at the first end of the tubular member that includes a female receiver that defines an opening for receiving a rod, wherein the opening and the tubular member are co-axial,
c. a light source disposed in the tubular member and inboard from the female receiver, wherein light from the light source is directed out of the opening in the instrument dock, and
d. a switch positioned inside the tubular member and adjacent the female receiver, wherein the switch is closed, thereby actuating the light source, when a threading rod is received in the female receiver.
2. The lighting device of claim 1 further comprising a power source disposed within the main body portion, and wherein the light source and power source are part of an electrical circuit.
3. The lighting device of claim 2 wherein the female receiver defines an elongated opening.
4. The lighting device of claim 3 wherein the female receiver is adapted to receive a threading rod that includes a light guide extending axially therethrough, wherein light from the light source is directed into one end of the threading rod along the entire axial length of the rod, and out the other end.
5. The lighting device of claim 4 wherein the light source is a high efficiency white LED that emits light at a narrow angle of focus, and wherein the numerical aperture of the light guide is approximately matched by the light emitted from the LED.
6. The lighting device of claim 5 further comprising a threading rod received in the opening in the instrument dock.
7. The lighting device of claim 6 wherein the threading rod has first and second ends and comprises a tubular member, a suture tie-off point and a light guide extending through the tubular member along the entire axial length of the tubular member from the first end to the second end, wherein both ends of the threading rod are adapted to be received in the female receiver, wherein when the first end is received in the female receiver light is emitted from the second end and when the second end is received in the female receiver light is emitted from the first end.
8. The lighting device of claim 3 further comprising a resilient member for retaining a rod received in the female receiver, wherein the resilient member defines a circular opening that is axially aligned with the elongated opening in the female receiver.
9. The lighting device of claim 7 wherein the wherein light guide comprises first and second ends that each include a translucent tip.
10. The lighting device of claim 1 further comprising a threading rod received in the opening in the instrument dock.
11. The lighting device of claim 10 wherein the threading rod comprises a tubular member, a suture permanently attached to the tubular member and a light guide extending along the entire axial length of the tubular member.
12. A lighting device for use in plastic surgery, the lighting device comprising:
a tubular member having first and second opposite ends and defining a longitudinal axis,
b. an instrument dock located at the first end of the tubular member that includes a female receiver that defines an opening for receiving a rod, wherein the opening and the tubular member are co-axial,
c. a light source disposed in the tubular member and inboard from the female receiver, wherein light from the light source is directed out of the opening in the instrument dock, and
d. a threading rod received in the opening in the instrument dock, wherein the threading rod has first and second ends and comprises a tubular member, a suture tie-off point and a light guide extending along the entire axial length of the tubular member from the first end to the second end, wherein both ends of the threading rod are adapted to be received in the female receiver, wherein when the first end is received in the female receiver light is emitted from the second end and when the second end is received in the female receiver light is emitted from the first end.
