Abstract

A dielectric barrier discharge lamp 100 has an internal electrode 11 inside a bulb 10 , and an external electrode 12 outside the bulb 10 . Lamp capacity C 0 per inner surface area of the bulb between the internal electrode and external electrode is set to less than 2.8 nF/m 2 . By setting lamp capacity C 0 within this range, lamp efficiency η, which is a value obtained by dividing an output luminous flux of the lamp by an power inputted to the lamp, is remarkably increased.

Claims (27)

1 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp comprising:

a bulb enclosing a discharge medium containing a rare gas; and

a first electrode and a second electrode arranged for the bulb,

wherein a lamp capacity per inner surface area of the bulb between the first and second electrodes is less than 2.8 nF/m 2 .

2 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 1 , wherein the lamp capacity per inner surface area of the bulb is less than 2.4 nF/m 2 .

3 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is arranged inside the bulb and the second electrode is arranged outside the bulb.

4 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 3 , wherein the second electrode is arranged at a distance from the bulb.

5 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp comprising:

a bulb enclosing a discharge medium containing a rare gas;

a first electrode and a second electrode arranged for the bulb; and

a lighting circuit for applying an alternating voltage between the first and second electrodes so as to repeatedly generate dielectric discharge for causing light emission by plasmanizing the rare gas,

wherein a discharge charge quantity per one discharge and per inner surface area of the bulb between the first and second electrodes is less than 29 μC/m 2 .

6 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 5 , wherein a peak-to-peak value of a voltage applied by the lighting circuit between the first and second electrodes is 1.25 kV or more and 3.2 kV or less.

7 . A dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 5 , wherein the first electrode is arranged inside the bulb and the second electrode is arranged outside the bulb.

8 . The dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 7 , wherein the second electrode is arranged at a distance from the bulb.

9 . A backlight device comprising:

the dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 1 ; and

a diffusion plate that has a light incidence surface and a light emission surface and serves to transmit a light emitted from the dielectric barrier discharge lamp from the light incidence surface to the light emission surface so that the light is emitted from the light emission surface.

10 . A liquid crystal display device comprising:

the backlight device according to claim 9 ; and

a liquid crystal panel disposed opposite the light emission surface of the diffusion plate.

11 . A backlight device comprising:

the dielectric barrier discharge lamp according to claim 5 ; and

a diffusion plate that has a light incidence surface and a light emission surface and serves to transmit a light emitted from the dielectric barrier discharge lamp from the light incidence surface to the light emission surface so that the light is emitted from the light emission surface.

12 . A liquid crystal display device comprising:

the backlight device according to claim 11 ; and

a liquid crystal panel disposed opposite the light emission surface of the diffusion plate.
