Abstract

A system and method for generating and optimizing clock signals with non-overlapping edges on a chip using a unique programmable on-chip clock generator. Overlapping of the edges of the clocking signals is avoided by adjusting an amount of delay introduced in the on-chip clock generator circuit. The amount of delay is adjusted by programming the on-chip clock generator using either hardware and/or software programming. In hardware programming, the amount of delay adjusted by physically altering the composition of delay elements in the on-chip clock generator. In software programming, the delay is adjusted using software commands to control the operation of delay elements in the on-chip clock generator, or to select the paths that delay the signals.

Claims (18)

1. A system for generating clock signals, comprising:

a first logic element for inputting an input clock signal and outputting a first output clock signal;

a delay path coupled to the first logic element for receiving the first output clock signal, and for outputting a delayed first output clock signal;

wherein the delay path includes:

a plurality of delay lines each having a different delay;

a demultiplexer for selecting a one of the plurality of delay lines to apply a delay to the first output clock signal based on a first control signal; and

a multiplexer to select the one of the plurality of delay lines to select the delayed first output clock signal based on a second control signal; and

a second logic element for receiving the delayed first output clock signal and outputting a second output clock signal such that no edge of the first output clock signal overlaps an edge of the second output clock signal.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the delay path comprises a plurality of delay elements.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein each delay element comprises a pair of inverters.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the delay elements are arranged in series with a connection point following each delay element such that a desired amount of delay is achieved by selecting one of the connection points.

5. The system of claim 4 , further comprising a multiplexer coupled to the connection points such that a desired connection point is selected using a control signal applied to the multiplexer.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second delay path coupled to the second logic element for receiving the second output clock signal, and for outputting a delayed second output clock signal.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first logic element receives the delayed second output clock signal.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first delay path controls the time between a falling edge of the first output clock and a next rising edge of the second output clock signal.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second delay path controls the time between a falling edge of the second output clock signal and a next rising edge of the first output clock signal.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is an environment requiring clock signals.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is an integrated circuit chip requiring clock signals.
