Abstract

The present invention relates to nanofibers. In particular, the present invention provides aligned nanofiber bundle assemblies. In some embodiments, the aligned nanofiber bundle assemblies are used for tissue regeneration, controlled growth of cells, and related methods (e.g., diagnostic methods, research methods, drug screening).

Claims (8)

1. A composition comprising a bundle of a plurality of longitudinally aligned nanofibers, wherein said nanofibers comprise self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules, wherein said self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules comprise a hydrophobic tail, a peptide segment configured for beta-sheet formation, and a charged segment; wherein said self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules interact to form aligned nanofibers; and wherein said bundle of aligned nanofibers comprises 15-35 nanofibers.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said hydrophobic tail comprises an alkyl tail.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein said alkyl tail comprises at least 16 carbon atoms.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said peptide segment configured for beta-sheet formation comprises uncharged amino acid residues.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein said peptide segment configured for beta-sheet formation comprises three alanine and three valine amino acid residues.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said charged segment comprises a charged peptide segment comprising charged amino acid residues.

7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein said charged amino acid residues comprises three glutamic acid residues.

8. A bundle of longitudinally aligned nanofibers, wherein said nanofibers comprise self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules, wherein said self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules comprise a hydrophobic tail, a peptide segment and a charged segment; wherein said bundle of nanofibers comprises 15-35 nanofibers.
