Intervertebral disc anulus implant
Systems for minimally invasive disc augmentation include an anulus augmentation implant suited for minimally invasive deployment. A nucleus augmentation component may be included. The anulus augmentation implant shields weakened regions of the anulus fibrosis and/or resists escape of natural nucleus pulposus and/or the augmentation component. Methods and deployment devices are also disclosed. Several embodiments cause or allow fibrous or bony ingrowth in or around the augmentation.
1. A method of containing an augmentation material within a weakened disc between two adjacent vertebral bodies to facilitate fusion, comprising:
identifying a defect in an anulus fibrosis of an intervertebral disc;
inserting one or more solid augmentation materials through and beyond said defect,
wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials is rigid;
wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials is bone;
placing said one or more solid augmentation materials against a healthy region of the anulus fibrosis;
providing an anchor and a barrier;
inserting a barrier through and beyond the defect;
positioning the barrier to partially encapsulate said one or more solid augmentation materials, thereby blocking said one or more solid augmentation materials from expulsion through the defect;
causing or allowing fibrous or bony ingrowth in or around said one or more solid augmentation materials;
positioning said anchor in the defect; and
anchoring said barrier to a vertebral endplate.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the barrier is expandable.
3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising expanding the barrier after insertion through the defect.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning the barrier along an innermost layer of the anulus fibrosis.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials comprises titanium.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the barrier comprises a polymer.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials comprises titanium and the barrier comprises PEEK.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said bone comprises at least one of morselized or block bone.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the barrier and the anchor are integral.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the barrier is coupled to at least one of said solid augmentation materials.
11. A method of containing an augmentation material within a weakened disc between two adjacent vertebral bodies to facilitate fusion, comprising:
identifying a defect in an anulus fibrosis of an intervertebral disc;
inserting one or more solid augmentation materials within the intervertebral disc,
wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials is rigid;
placing said one or more solid augmentation materials against a healthy region of the anulus fibrosis;
providing an anchor and a barrier;
inserting the barrier into the intervertebral disc to partially encapsulate said one or more solid augmentation materials, thereby blocking said one or more solid augmentation materials from expulsion through the defect;
causing or allowing fibrous or bony ingrowth in or around said one or more solid augmentation materials;
positioning said anchor in the defect; and
anchoring said barrier to a vertebral body.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier is expandable.
13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising expanding the barrier.
14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising positioning the barrier along an innermost layer of the anulus fibrosis.
15. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials comprises titanium.
16. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials comprises bone.
17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier comprises a polymer.
18. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials comprises at least one of titanium and bone, and the barrier comprises PEEK.
19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier and the anchor are integral.
20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier is coupled to at least one of said solid augmentation materials.
21. A method of containing an augmentation material within a weakened disc between two adjacent vertebral bodies to facilitate fusion, comprising:
inserting one or more solid augmentation materials into an intervertebral disc,
wherein at least one of the solid materials comprises bone;
wherein at least one of said solid augmentation materials is rigid;
placing said one or more solid augmentation materials against a healthy region of an anulus fibrosis of the intervertebral disc;
providing an anchor and a barrier;
inserting the barrier into the intervertebral disc to partially encapsulate said one or more solid augmentation materials, thereby blocking said one or more solid augmentation materials from expulsion from the intervertebral disc;
causing or allowing fibrous or bony ingrowth in or around said one or more solid augmentation materials; and
anchoring said barrier to a vertebral endplate.
22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising inserting at least one of said solid augmentation materials and the barrier through a defect in the anulus fibrosis.
23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the barrier is expandable.
