Abstract

Systems, including apparatus and methods, for performing assays with adjustable fluid communication between samples.

Claims (12)

1 - 12 . (canceled)

13 . A method of assaying a plurality of biological or chemical samples, comprising:

disposing samples in individually addressable sub-wells of a well;

adjusting fluid levels in the well so that groups of the samples are in fluid isolation from one another and so that the samples within each group are in fluid communication; and

adding fluid to place all samples in fluid communication.

14 . The method of claim 13 , the sub-wells beings being arranged in rows and columns, wherein the step of disposing includes a step of placing a different cell type in each row or column.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein each different cell type is arrayed in a first direction, and wherein each group is arrayed in a second direction generally orthogonal to the first direction.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of disposing is performed with each of the sub-wells in fluid isolation from one another.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of adjusting includes a step of contacting each group of samples with a different reagent.

18 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of adding includes a step of contacting all the samples together with a test compound in a shared volume of fluid.

19 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of adding is performed before the step of adjusting.

20 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of disposing forms linear arrays of different cell types within the well, and wherein the step of adjusting includes a step of individually contacting each linear array of different cell types with a reagent in a shared fluid volume.
