Abstract

A corrosion-responsive agent comprising a neutralized metal salt of a corrosion inhibiting organic anion and methods of making and using it are described.

Claims (27)

1. A corrosion-responsive agent comprising a neutralized metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion, wherein a 2.5% by weight aqueous solution of the dried salt has a pH that is above 6 and below 8, wherein the agent is substantially free of zinc phosphate.

2. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , wherein the neutralized metal salt comprises a Zn(II), Al(III), Mg(II), Ca(II), Nd(III), Sr(II), Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Ce(III or IV), or Fe(II or III) salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion.

3. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , wherein the neutralized metal salt comprises a zinc or neodymium salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion.

4. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , wherein the corrosion-inhibiting organic anion comprises an anion of a compound that is selected from the group consisting of mercapto-substituted organics and thio-substituted organics.

The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , wherein the corrosion-inhibiting organic anion comprises an anion of a compound that is selected from the group consisting of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-thiol, 1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol, 1-pyrollidinecarbodithioic acid, 2,2′-dithiobis(benzothiazole), 2,4-dimercapto-6-amino-5-triazine, 2,4-dithiohydantoin, 2,5-dimethylbenzothiazole, 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 2-mercapto-5-methylbenzimidazole, 2-mercapto-5-nitrobenzimidazole, 2-mercaptobenzimidizole, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2-mercaptoethane sulfonic acid, 2-mercaptoimidazole, 2-mercaptothiazoline, 2-thiouracil, 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole, 5,5-dithio-bis(1,3,4-thiadiazole-2(3H)- -thione, 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 6-amino-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 6-mercaptopurine, -alky- or N-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbamates, alkyl- and cyclo-alkyl mercaptanes, benzothiazole, dimercapto pyridine, dimethyldithio carbamic acid, dithiocyanuric acid, mercaptobenzothiazole, mercaptobenzoxazole, mercaptoethanesulfonic acid, mercaptoimidazole, mercaptopyridine, mercaptopyrimidine, mercaptoquinoline, mercaptothiazole, mercaptothiazoline, mercaptotriazole, O,O-dialkyl- and O,O-dicycloalkyl-dithiophosphates, O-alkyl- or O-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbonates, o-ethylxanthic acid, quinoxaline-2,3-thiol, thioacetic acid, thiocresol, thiosalicylic acid, trithiocyanuric acid, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 1,3,4 thiadiazole, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, dimethyldithiocarbamic acid, o-ethylxanthic acid, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, diethyldithiocarbamic acid, 5-amino-1,3,4,-thiadiazole-2-thiol, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2,1,3-benzothiazole, 1-pyrollidinecarbodithioic acid, 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-thiol, 2 mercapto-5-nitrobenzimidazole, benzothiazole, 2-mercaptobenzoazole, 2-mercapto-5-methylbenzimidazole, mercaptobenzothiazoles, mercaptothiazolines, mercaptobenzimidazoles, mercaptoimidazoles, 5,5-dithio-bis(1,3,4-thiadiazole-2(3H)-thione, mercaptobenzoxazoles, mercaptothiazole, mercaptotriazole, O-alkyl- or O-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbonates, O,O-dialkyl- and O,O-dicycloalkyl-dithiophosphates, dithiocyanuric acid, trithiocyanuric acid, 2,4-dithiohydantoin, 2,4-dimercapto-6-amino-5-triazine, and mixtures thereof.

6. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 2 , comprising the Zn(II), Al(III), Mg(II), Ca(II), Nd(III), Sr(II), Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Ce(III or IV), or Fe(II or III) salt of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole.

7. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , comprising a neutralized Zn salt of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT).

8. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , comprising Zn(DMcT) 2 and a Group IA metal salt of DMcT.

9. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , comprising Zn(DMcT) 2 and either or both of Na 2 (DMcT) and K 2 (DMcT).

10. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , wherein a 2.5% by weight aqueous solution of the salt has a pH between about 6.5 and about 7.2.

11. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 1 , contained in a corrosion resisting coating on the surface of a metal that is subject to corrosion.

The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 11 , wherein the corrosion resisting coating comprises a chromate conversion coating directly adhered to the surface of the metal, a layer of a binder polymer covering the chromate conversion coating, and a layer comprising the corrosion-responsive agent covering the layer of binder polymer.

13. The corrosion-responsive agent according to claim 11 , wherein the corrosion resisting coating comprises a binder polymer intermixed with the neutralized metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion.

14. A method of making a corrosion-responsive agent comprising a neutralized metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion, the method comprising:

providing a first metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion, wherein the metal salt is selected from one or more of Zn(II), Al(III), Mg(II), Ca(II), Nd(III), Sr(II), Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Ce(III or IV), or Fe(II or III) salt; and

contacting the first metal salt with a Group IA metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion of a compound that is selected from the group consisting of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-thiol, 1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol, 1-pyrollidinecarbodithioic acid, 2,2′-dithiobis(benzothiazole), 2,4-dimercapto-6-amino-5-triazine, 2,4-dithiohydantoin, 2,5-dimethylbenzothiazole, 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 2-mercapto-5-methylbenzimidazole, 2-mercapto-5-nitrobenzimidazole, 2-mercaptobenzimidizole, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2-mercaptoethane sulfonic acid, 2-mercaptoimidazole, 2-mercaptothiazoline, 2-thiouracil, 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole, 5,5-dithio-bis(1,3,4-thiadiazole-2(3H)- -thione, 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 6-amino-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 6-mercaptopurine, -alky- or N-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbamates, alkyl- and cyclo-alkyl mercaptanes, benzothiazole, dimercapto pyridine, dimethyldithio carbamic acid, dithiocyanuric acid, mercaptobenzothiazole, mercaptobenzoxazole, mercaptoethanesulfonic acid, mercaptoimidazole, mercaptopyridine, mercaptopyrimidine, mercaptoquinoline, mercaptothiazole, mercaptothiazoline, mercaptotriazole, O,O-dialkyl- and O,O-dicycloalkyl-dithiophosphates, O-alkyl- or O-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbonates, o-ethylxanthic acid, quinoxaline-2,3-thiol, thioacetic acid, thiocresol, thiosalicylic acid, trithiocyanuric acid, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 1,3,4 thiadiazole, 6-ethoxy-2-mercaptobenzothiazole, dimethyldithiocarbamic acid, o-ethylxanthic acid, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, diethyldithiocarbamic acid, 5-amino-1,3,4,-thiadiazole-2-thiol, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2,1,3-benzothiazole, 1-pyrollidinecarbodithioic acid, 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-thiol, 2 mercapto-5-nitrobenzimidazole, benzothiazole, 2-mercaptobenzoazole, 2-mercapto-5-methylbenzimidazole, mercaptobenzothiazoles, mercaptothiazolines, mercaptobenzimidazoles, mercaptoimidazoles, 5,5-dithio-bis(1,3,4-thiadiazole-2(3H)-thione, mercaptobenzoxazoles, mercaptothiazole, mercaptotriazole, O-alkyl- or O-cycloalkyl-dithiocarbonates, O,O-dialkyl- and O,O-dicycloalkyl-dithiophosphates, dithiocyanuric acid, trithiocyanuric acid, 2,4-dithiohydantoin, 2,4-dimercapto-6-amino-5-triazine, and mixtures thereof in a solution that is substantially free of zinc phosphate to bring an aqueous mixture of the metal salts to a pH of above 6 and below 8.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the step of providing the metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion comprises:

contacting a nitrate salt of the metal with an acid form of the corrosion inhibiting organic anion in a methanol/water mixture; and

recovering the metal salt of a corrosion inhibiting organic anion as a precipitate.

16. The method according to claim 14 , comprising the steps of:

contacting Zn(NO 3 ) 2 with DMcT in a methanol/water mixture; and recovering Zn(DMcT) 2 as a precipitate; and

contacting the Zn(DMcT) 2 with a basic material that is selected from the group consisting of Na 2 (DMcT), K 2 (DMcT), and mixtures thereof, in an amount sufficient to neutralize the Zn(DMcT) 2 salt to a point where a 2.5% by weight aqueous solution of the dried salt has a pH between about 6.5 and about 7.2.

A method of using a corrosion-responsive agent comprising a neutralized metal salt of a corrosion-inhibiting organic anion to reduce or prevent the corrosion of a metal that is subject to corrosion, wherein the agent is substantially free of zinc phosphate, the method comprising applying to a surface of the metal that is subject to corrosion a neutralized metal salt of the corrosion-inhibiting organic anion, wherein a 2.5% by weight aqueous mixture of the dried salt has a pH that is above 6 and below 8.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the metal that is subject to corrosion is a copper-containing aluminum alloy.

19. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

applying a conversion coating to the surface of the metal that is subject to corrosion, wherein the conversion coating is selected from a chromate conversion coating and a coating comprising poly [bis(2,5-(N,N,N′,N′-tetralkyl)amine)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (BAMPPV); and

applying a coating comprising the neutralized metal salt of the corrosion-inhibiting organic anion over the conversion coating.
