Abstract

A method for purifying PrP c , a purified preparation of PrP c and methods and kits for identifying the presence of PrP c are provided.

Claims (5)

1. A method for identifying the presence of PrP sc comprising

(a) contacting a sample suspected of containing an infectious prion protein with

(i) a substantially purified preparation of PrP c obtained by immunoaffinity chromatography and ion exchange chromatography, wherein the substantially purified preparation is a preparation that comprises at least 95% PrP c , and

(ii) a nucleic acid molecule which enhances the amplification of PrP sc , wherein said nucleic acid molecule comprises at least 300 bases; and

(b) identifying the presence of PrP sc .
