Abstract

A transparent conductor including a conductive layer coated on a substrate is described. More specifically, the conductive layer comprises a network of nanowires which may be embedded in a matrix. The conductive layer is optically transparent and flexible. It can be coated or laminated onto a variety of substrates, including flexible and rigid substrates.

Claims (25)

1. A coating composition comprising:

a solvent comprising water;

a cellulose viscosity modifier;

a surfactant; and

conductive nanowires consisting of a plurality of silver nanowires, wherein the plurality of silver nanowires are present at 0.05% to 1.4% of the total weight of the coating composition, and wherein, when slot-die coated on a substrate, the coating composition is capable of forming a transparent conductive film having a sheet resistance of no more than 1000 ohms/sq and light transmission of at least 80%.

2. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein each of the silver nanowires has an aspect ratio of about 50 or more.

3. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein each of the silver nanowires has an aspect ratio of about 100 or more.

4. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the solvent further comprises isopropanol.

5. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the cellulose viscosity modifier is present in an amount from about 0.02% to 4% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

6. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the cellulose viscosity modifier is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose, or hydroxyl ethyl cellulose.

7. The coating composition of claim 6 wherein the cellulose viscosity modifier is HPMC in an amount from about 0.02% to 0.5% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

8. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the surfactant is fluorinated alkyl ester, polyoxyethylene octyl phenyl ether, 2,5,8,11-tetraethyl-6-dodecyn-5,8-diol ethoxylate, or n-Dodecyl-β-D-maltoside.

9. The coating composition of claim 8 wherein the surfactant is fluorinated alkyl ester in an amount from about 0.0025% to 0.05% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.

10. The coating composition of claim 1 having a viscosity between about 1 and 100 cP.

11. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein a weight ratio of the cellulose viscosity modifier to the silver nanowires is in the range of about 5 to about 0.000625.

12. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein a weight ratio of the surfactant to the cellulose viscosity modifier is in the range of about 80 to about 0.01.

13. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the surfactant is present in an amount from about 0.0025% to 0.1% by weight based on the total weight of the composition, and wherein a weight ratio of the silver nanowires to the surfactant is in the range of about 560:1 to 5:1.

14. A coating composition comprising:

a solvent comprising water;

a cellulose viscosity modifier;

a surfactant; and

conductive nanowires consisting of a plurality of silver nanowires, wherein the plurality of silver nanowires are present at 0.05% to 1.4% of the total weight of the coating composition, and wherein a weight ratio of the silver nanowires to the surfactant is in the range of about 560:1 to 5:1, a weight ratio of the cellulose viscosity modifier to the silver nanowires is in the range of about 5 to about 0.000625, and a weight ratio of the surfactant to the cellulose viscosity modifier is in the range of about 80 to about 0.01.

15. The coating composition of claim 14 wherein the cellulose viscosity modifier is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose, or hydroxyl ethyl cellulose.

16. The coating composition of claim 14 wherein the surfactant is a fluorosurfactant.

17. The coating composition of claim 14 wherein the solvent further comprises isopropanol.
