Abstract

A method and system for cycle slip framing is disclosed. The method includes receiving an asynchronous signal and generating a synchronous pulse after receiving the asynchronous signal. The method further provides that the synchronous pulse be used to affect a bit slip that results in the moving of a character frame in the recovered data of a deserializer. According to one embodiment of the invention, the moving of the character frame is prompted by a single control signal of a clock divider circuit which causes the removal of a single clock cycle of a clock signal supplied to said deserializer.

Claims (39)

1. A method of cycle slip framing comprising:

receiving a slip bit signal associated with a serial bit data stream;

in response to receiving said slip bit signal, applying a single control signal to a multiplexor to delay an edge of a clock signal;

generating from the clock signal a plurality of divided clocks; and applying the plurality of divided clocks to a deserializer to effect a bit slip in the deserializer and to move a character frame with respect to said serial bit data stream.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said receiving said slip bit signal results in the removal of a clock cycle of a clock signal of said plurality of divided clocks supplied to said deserializer.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said removal of said clock cycle causes a skipping of a data bit from said serial bit data stream by said deserializer.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein a clock divider supplies the plurality of divided clocks to said deserializer and wherein each of the plurality of divided clocks is supplied directly from the output of a sequential circuit.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

generating a synchronous pulse that is provided to said clock divider wherein generating said synchronous pulse comprises passing said slip bit signal through a series of sequential cells clocked at an internal full rate clock and wherein said slip bit signal is asynchronous.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said slip bit signal is an asynchronous signal received from an external agent and is coupled to one input of an AND gate.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said AND gate comprises an output that is asserted for a full clock cycle after a transition of said asynchronous signal.

8. In a digital system, a method comprising:

a) receiving an incident clock signal and dividing said incident clock signal to produce a plurality of divided clock signals that are provided from a plurality of sequential circuits for respective stages of a deserializer;

b) applying a control signal to a multiplexor to remove a clock cycle from at least one of said plurality of divided clock signals in response to receiving a slip bit signal; and

c) resuming the dividing of said incident clock signal according to a) upon a next clock cycle following b), wherein removing said clock cycle causes said deserializer to skip a data received by the deserializer.

9. A method as described in claim 8 further comprising:

receiving said slip bit signal, wherein said slip bit signal is asynchronous to said digital system; and

synchronizing said slip bit signal to said incident clock signal.

10. A method as described in claim 8 wherein each of said plurality of sequential circuits includes toggle flip-flop circuit.

11. A method as described in claim 9 further comprising:

supplying a serial bit data stream to said deserializer circuit; and

using said plurality of divided clock signals to recover deserialized data at an output of said deserializer circuit according to a character frame, wherein said bit slip signal causes said character frame to shift by one bit position with respect to bit positions of said serial bit data stream.

12. A method as described in claim 11 further comprising:

generating said slip bit signal in response to a detection;

testing if a character recovered by said deserializer circuit is an expected framing character; and

repeating the generation of the slip bit signal and said testing if said character recovered has an expected framing character until said character recovered by said deserializer circuit is said framing character.

13. A receiver circuit comprising:

a logic circuit for receiving a slip bit signal and for generating a synchronized slip bit signal in response thereto; and

a clock divider circuit coupled with the logic circuit for:

a) receiving an incident clock signal and dividing said incident clock signal to produce at least one output clock signal, wherein the at least one output clock signal is for a respective stage of a deserializer;

b) removing a clock cycle from said at least one output clock signal in response to receiving said slip bit signal; and

c) resuming the generation of said at least one output clock signal according to a) upon a next clock cycle following b) wherein removing said clock cycle causes said deserializer to skip a data bit that it receives from an incoming serial bit data stream; and

said deserializer that provides deserialized data according to a character frame that is related to said incoming serial bit data stream and said at least one output clock signal.

14. A receiver circuit as described in claim 13 wherein said slip bit signal causes said character frame to shift by one bit position with respect to bit positions of said serial bit data stream.

15. A receiver circuit as described in claim 13 , wherein the at least one output clock signal is generated by dividing the incident clock signal by using a plurality of toggle flip-flops coupled in a serial fashion and wherein said slip bit signal received by said logic circuit is asynchronous to said receiver circuit.

16. A receiver circuit as described in claim 13 wherein said slip bit signal received by said logic circuit is asynchronous to said receiver circuit and wherein further said logic circuit comprises four sequential circuits.

17. A receiver circuit as described in claim 15 wherein said deserializer circuit comprises N stages which each receive a respective output clock signal of said plurality of divided output clock signals.

18. A receiver circuit as described in claim 13 wherein said b) and said c) are performed by a multiplexer of said deserializer that is coupled in a feedback path of a sequential circuit of said clock divider coupled in toggle fashion.

19. A receiver circuit as described in claim 14 wherein said slip bit signal is externally generated during a framing period of said receiver circuit and wherein said receiver circuit is integrated within a receiver channel of a transceiver circuit.
