Abstract

A dynamic stabilization, motion preservation spinal implant system includes an anchor system, a horizontal rod system and a vertical rod system. The systems are modular so that various constructs and configurations can be created and customized to a patient.

Claims (49)

1. A spine implant that is adapted to be mounted to a spine comprising:

a deflection rod system;

said deflection rod system including an inner rod and an outer shell;

wherein said inner rod is elongated and said outer shell is elongated along the elongated inner rod;

wherein said inner rod extends past said outer shell;

a tubular shield located about and along said outer shell;

a connector provided at an end of said inner rod which end is located past said outer shell and external to the shield;

an annular gap between the outer shell and the tubular shield such that at least a portion of the inner rod and outer shell can deflect radially within the tubular shield; and

said end is movable relative to another section of said deflection rod system in order to accommodate movement of a spine.

2. The spine implant of claim 1 wherein said connector includes a spherical surface.

3. The spine implant of claim 1 wherein said connector includes a cylindrical surface.

4. The spine implant of claim 1 wherein said connector is part of a ball joint.

5. The spine implant of claim 1 , wherein the tubular shield includes a conically-shaped inner surface located adjacent to the outer shell.

6. The spine implant of claim 1 , wherein the inner rod is cylindrical in shape and said outer shell is conical in shape and the shield includes a conically-shaped inner surface located adjacent to the outer shell.

7. The spine implant of claim 1 including a vertical rod with a capture mechanism that can capture and retain said connector.

8. The spine implant of claim 1 wherein said inner rod is comprised of a super elastic material.

9. The implant of claim 1 wherein said inner rod is cylindrical in shape and said outer shell is conical in shape.

10. The implant of claim 1 wherein said deflection rod system can distribute a load placed on the deflection rod system by the spine along the elongated inner rod and the elongated outer shell.

11. The implant of claim 1 wherein said connector is an end cap.

12. The implant of claim 1 wherein said inner rod includes nickel-titanium (NiTi) and said outer shell includes polyetheretherketone (PEEK).

13. A spinal implant that is adapted to be mounted to a spine comprising:

a deflection rod system;

said deflection rod system including an inner rod and an outer shell;

wherein said inner rod is elongated and said outer shell is elongated along the elongated inner rod;

a shield located about and along said outer shell;

wherein said inner rod is cylindrical in shape and said outer shell is conical in shape and the shield includes a conically-shaped inner surface located adjacent to the outer shell;

said inner rod extending beyond said outer shell and beyond said shield;

a connector provided at an end of said inner rod which end is located past said outer shell and past said shield; and

said end is movable relative to another section of said inner rod of said deflection rod system in order to accommodate movement of a spine.

14. The spine implant of claim 13 wherein said connector includes a spherical surface.

15. The spine implant of claim 13 wherein said connector includes a cylindrical surface.

16. The spine implant of claim 13 wherein said connector is part of a ball joint.

17. The spine implant of claim 13 wherein said connector is adapted to be secure to a rod and allow the rod to move with three degrees of freedom.

18. The spine implant of claim 13 including a housing mounted about said connector, wherein said housing is adapted to be secured to a rod.

19. The spine implant of claim 13 including a vertical rod with a capture mechanism that can capture and retain said connector.

20. The spine implant of claim 13 wherein said inner rod is comprised of a super elastic material.

21. The implant of claim 13 wherein said deflection rod system can distribute a load placed on the deflection rod system by the spine along the elongated inner rod, the elongated outer shell and the shield.

22. The implant of claim 13 wherein said connector is an end cap.

23. A spinal implant that is adapted to be mounted to a spine comprising:

a deflection rod;

a shield located about said deflection rod;

said deflection rod extending beyond said shield;

said shield including an inner surface that can limit the amount of deflection of said deflection rod;

an annular gap between said deflection rod and said inner surface of said shield such that the deflection rod can deflect radially within said shield;

a connector end cap provided at an end of said deflection rod, which end is located past said shield;

said end is movable relative to another section of said deflection rod in order to accommodate movement of said spine;

a rod; and

a capture mechanism located on said rod, which capture mechanism is secured to said end cap.

24. The implant of claim 23 wherein said inner surface of said shield is conical in shape such that said annular gap increases in size towards said end.
