Abstract

A dynamic stabilization, motion preservation spinal implant system includes an anchor system, a horizontal rod system and a vertical rod system. The systems are modular so that various constructs and configurations can be created and customized to a patient.

Claims (88)

1. An implant adapted to be implanted in a spine of a patient comprising:

a shield with a shield cavity;

a deflection rod that is mounted in said shield cavity;

said deflection rod able to be deflected in said shield cavity and the motion of said deflection rod is limited by the shield cavity;

a connector located at an end of said deflection rod;

a rod connected to said connector; and

a mount extending from said shield.

2. The implant of claim 1 including:

said mount including a mount channel that is adapted to accept another spine implant that is implanted into the spine;

said shield being elongated; and

said mount channel being about parallel to said elongated shield.

3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein said mount is

adapted to allow said implant to be mounted to a rod.

4. The implant of claim 1 including:

said deflection rod including an inner rod and an outer sleeve.

5. The implant of claim 1 including:

said deflection rod including an inner rod made of a superelastic material and a cone shaped outer sleeve.

6. The implant of claim 1 including:

a cone shaped outer sleeve located about said deflection rod that can spread a load placed on said deflection rod along said deflection rod.

7. The implant of claim 1 wherein said shield cavity is cone shaped.

8. The implant of claim 1 wherein:

said deflection rod has a first end and a second end with said first end fixed in said shield cavity;

said deflection rod decreasing in size toward said second end; and

said shield cavity increasing in size toward said second end of said deflection rod.

9. The implant of claim 1 wherein said deflection rod extends from said shield cavity.

10. The implant of claim 1 wherein said deflection rod includes an inner rod and an outer shell with said inner rod extending past said outer shell and out of said shield cavity.

11. The implant of claim 1 wherein said deflection rod includes an inner rod and an outer shell with said inner rod including a first end and a second end and with said second end of said inner rod extending past said outer shell and out of said shield cavity and with said connector attached to said second end.

12. The implant of claim 1 wherein said shield has a first end and a second end with said deflection rod extending out of said second end and with said mount mounted adjacent one of said first end and said second end.

13. The implant of claim 1 including a second shield and a second shield cavity with a second deflection rod mounted in said second shield cavity; and wherein said second shield is connected to said mount.

14. The implant of claim 13 wherein said first shield and said second shield are about parallel.

15. An implant adapted to be implanted in a spine of a patient comprising:

a shield with a shield cavity;

a deflection rod that is mounted in said shield cavity;

said deflection rod including an inner rod made of a superelastic material;

said inner rod having a first end and a second end extending from said cavity;

said deflection rod including an outer shell covering said inner rod;

said outer shell comprised of a bio-compatible polymer;

said outer shell being cone-shaped;

said outer shell decreasing in size in a direction toward said second end of said inner rod;

said deflection rod able to be deflected in said shield cavity and the motion of said deflection rod being limited by contact with said shield;

said shield cavity increasing in size in a direction toward said second end of said inner rod; and

a mount extending from said shield, said mount adapted to be connected to another bone implant.

16. The implant of claim 15 including:

a connected located at said second end of said inner rod of said deflection rod;

said connector located adjacent to said outer shell;

said connector extending from said shield; and

a rod connected to said connector.

17. The implant of claim 16 wherein said connector includes a ball and socket connector.

18. The implant of claim 16 wherein said connector allows said rod to pivot about said inner rod.

19. The implant of claim 15 including a second shield and a second shield cavity with a second deflection rod mounted in said second shield cavity; and wherein said second shield is connected to said mount.

20. The implant of claim 19 wherein said first shield and said second shield are about parallel.

21. An implant adapted to be implanted in a spine of a patient comprising:

a shield with a shield cavity;

a deflection rod that is mounted in said shield cavity;

said deflection rod including an inner rod made of a super elastic material;

said inner rod having a first end and a second end extending from said cavity;

said deflection rod including an outer shell covering said inner rod;

said outer shell comprised of a bio-compatible polymer;

said outer shell cone shaped and decreases in size in a direction toward said second end of said inner rod

said deflection rod able to be deflected in said shield cavity and the motion of said deflection rod is limited by the shield cavity;

said shield cavity increasing in size in a direction toward said second end of said inner rod; and

a mount extending from said shield, said mount adapted to be connected to another bone implant; and

said shield being elongated with an elongated side and a first end and a second end; and

with said mount extending from on of said elongated side, said first end and said second end.

22. The implant of claim 21 including a second body with a second shield and a second shield cavity with a second deflection rod mounted in said second shield cavity; and wherein said second body is connected to said mount.

23. The implant of claim 22 wherein said first body and said second body are about parallel.

24. The implant of claim 1 wherein said shield cavity is asymmetrical.

25. The implant of claim 1 wherein said shield cavity is asymmetrically and conically shaped.

26. The implant of claim 1 wherein said mount allows said shield to be secured in a direction that is about perpendicular to said shield.

27. The implant of claim 15 wherein said mount allows said shield to be secured in a direction that is about perpendicular to said shield.

28. The implant of claim 21 wherein said mount allows said shield to be secured in a direction that is about perpendicular to said shield.

29. A spinal implant adapted to be implanted in a patient comprising:

a shield with a shield cavity;

a mount extending from said shield;

a deflection rod extending through the shield cavity and having a first end mounted in said shield cavity and a second end external to said shield cavity;

the second end of the deflection rod including a connector configured for mounting a spinal rod; and

wherein said deflection rod is able to be deflected in said shield cavity and wherein deflection of said deflection rod is limited by contact with the shield.

30. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said shield has a longitudinal axis and said mount includes a mount channel oriented parallel to said longitudinal axis and adapted to accept another spine implant which is implanted into the spine.

31. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said mount is adapted to allow said implant to be mounted to a rod.

32. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said deflection rod includes an inner rod and an outer sleeve.

33. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said deflection rod includes an inner rod comprising a superelastic material and a conical outer sleeve.

34. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said deflection rod comprises an inner metal rod and an outer polymer sleeve.

35. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said deflection rod comprises an inner Nitinol rod and an outer polymer sleeve.

36. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said shield cavity increases in diameter in the direction going from the first end of the deflection towards the second end of the deflection rod.

37. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein:

said deflection rod decreases in diameter toward said second end of the deflection rod; and

said shield cavity increases in diameter toward the second end of the deflection rod.

38. The spinal implant of claim 29 , wherein said deflection rod includes an inner rod and an outer shell with said inner rod extending past said outer shell adjacent the second end of the deflection rod.
