Abstract

An apparatus for sterile filling of beverage containers has a first module and a second module. The first module rinses and sterilizes empty containers and delivers the sterilized containers to the second module. The second module fills and caps the containers with beverage product at ambient temperature in an active sterilization zone utilizing an e-beam sterilization unit.

a second e-beam emitter operably associated with the capper wheel, the second e-beam emitter emitting a second e-beam field wherein the capper wheel moves the capper chuck into the second e-beam field at a cap loaded position, wherein the second e-beam emitter is configured to aid in sterilizing a cap as the cap is rotated in the second e-beam field.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second e-beam emitter is positioned below the capper chuck and wherein the second e-beam field is directed upwards towards an underside surface of the capper chuck.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the capper chuck rotates about a central axis while the capper chuck is in the second e-beam field.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a third e-beam emitter operably associated with the capper wheel, the third e-beam emitter emitting a third e-beam field, wherein the capper wheel moves the capper chuck into the third e-beam field at a cap installing position.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the third e-beam field is directed at an airspace below the capper chuck.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the third e-beam field is dimensioned to encompass an outside surface of the cap as the capper chuck is raised off of the cap at a finished position.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising a fourth e-beam emitter operably associated with the capper wheel and positioned generally adjacent the third e-beam emitter, the fourth e-beam emitter emitting a fourth e-beam field, wherein the capper wheel moves the capper chuck into the fourth e-beam field at the cap installing position.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the fourth e-beam field is directed at the airspace.

9. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the third e-beam emitter comprises a plurality of e-beam emitters positioned generally adjacent one another.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a gripper associated with the capper chuck, the gripper adapted to receive a container wherein the capper chuck is adapted to receive the cap in the cap loaded position and install the cap onto the container in the cap installing position.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the capper chuck comprises a plurality of capper chucks and the gripper comprises a plurality of grippers, a respective capper chuck associated with a respective gripper.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a capper wheel having a capper chuck adapted to receive a cap to be placed on a container; and

a first capper wheel e-beam emitter operably associated with the capper wheel, the first capper wheel e-beam emitter emitting a first e-beam field;

wherein the capper wheel moves the capper chuck into the first e-beam field and wherein the capper chuck rotates about a central axis while the capper chuck is in the first e-beam field and the first e-beam field is configured to aid in sterilizing the capper chuck.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the capper chuck is rotated approximately 180 degrees.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the first capper wheel e-beam emitter is positioned below the capper chuck and wherein the first capper wheel e-beam field is directed upwards towards an underside surface of the capper chuck.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a capper wheel having a capper chuck adapted to receive a cap, the capper wheel further having a gripper adapted to receive a container filled with product;

a first e-beam emitter emitting a first e-beam field directed at the capper chuck at a start position;

a second e-beam emitter emitting a second e-beam field directed at the capper chuck at a cap loaded position, wherein the capper chuck rotates about a central axis in the cap loaded position, and wherein the capper chuck is adapted to rotate the cap loaded therein in the second e-beam field; and

a third e-beam emitter emitting a third e-beam field directed at the airspace located generally between the capper chuck and the gripper, wherein the capper wheel is adapted to move the capper chuck, wherein the gripper is adapted to receive the container to a cap installing position, and wherein the capper chuck is adapted to move to install the cap onto the container.

16. A method for maintaining a sterile environment during the capping of a container filled with product comprising:

providing a first e-beam emitter directed at a capper chuck;

providing a second e-beam emitter directed at an inside area of a cap; and

providing a third e-beam emitter directed at an airspace located between a filled container and the cap as the cap is rotated onto the filled container.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the second e-beam emitter is directed such that when the cap is rotated substantially all of the inside surface of the cap is exposed to the second e-beam emitter.

18. A method comprising:

(A) receiving a container filled with product;

(B) substantially sterilizing a capper chuck;

(C) receiving a cap by the capper chuck;

(D) rotating the cap with the capper chuck while simultaneously sterilizing the inside surface of the cap;

(E) substantially sterilizing the airspace between the cap and the container; and

(F) capping a container filled with product.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein (A) further comprises receiving the container with grippers at a neck portion of the filled containers.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein (B) further comprises directing an e-beam emitter at the capper chuck.

21. The method of claim 18 wherein (D) comprises directing an e-beam emitter at the inside surface of the cap and rotating the cap such that the entire inside surface is exposed to the e-beam emitter.

22. The method of claim 18 wherein (E) comprises directing an e-beam emitter at the airspace between the cap and the container.

23. The method of claim 18 wherein (F) further comprises rotating the cap onto the filled container.
