Abstract

Systems and methods for providing targeted content to a patient who has received a prescription for medication. The systems and methods generally provide the content prior to the Point of Sale (POS) of the actual prescription to allow patients to review the content and possibly act on it prior to actually obtaining the medication. Depending on embodiment, the content may be provided by a pharmacy at or around the time of dispensing or by a physician at or around the time of prescribing.

Claims (24)

1. A system for generating information at a physician's office for a patient related to a prescribed medication, the system comprising:

a physician's server which is attached to the Internet, said physician's server being provided with prescription information, as part of a medication being prescribed by a physician to a patient;

content requesting software running on said physician's server;

an auxiliary computer, said auxiliary computer also attached to the Internet and receiving information from said physician's server;

selection software running on said auxiliary computer; and

a bridge server attached to the Internet and requesting information from said auxiliary computer and sending instructions to a printer to print content;

wherein said content requesting software on said physician's server forms a first data structure including at least a portion of said prescription information and transmits said first data structure to said auxiliary computer;

wherein said selection software on said auxiliary computer receives said first data structure and from at least a portion of said first data structure selects content for said patient;

wherein said auxiliary computer creates and holds a second data structure indicative of said content;

wherein said bridge server periodically requests second data structures from said auxiliary computer;

wherein, only upon receipt of such a request from said bridge server, said auxiliary computer forwards said second data structure to said bridge server; and

wherein, in response to said second data structure being received, said bridge server causes said content to be printed.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said content functions to induce said patient to purchase a particular product.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein said content functions to induce said patient to purchase a particular brand of medication.

4. The system of claim 1 further comprising a physician's device, said physician's device being provided said prescription information from a physician and transferring said prescription information to said physician's server.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein said physician's device comprises a handheld computer.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein said physician's device indicates when said content is printed.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said second data structure comprises said content.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said second data structure references content stored on said bridge server.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein said bridge server reformats said second data structure into material understood by a printer.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein said physician's server is loaned to said physician's office.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein said physician's server comprises an electronic prescribing vendor's server.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein said physician's server comprises a web browser accessing an electronic prescribing vendor's server acting as an application service provider (ASP).

13. The system of claim 1 wherein said bridge server queues content to be printed by said printer.
