Abstract

Uses of recombinant procalcitonin 3-116 in the diagnosis and therapy of septic diseases and the measurement of prohormones other than procalcitonin, and of dipeptidyl peptidase IV, as biomarkers in the diagnosis of sepsis.

Claims (21)

1. A method for the detection of sepsis in an individual suspected of having sepsis, comprising:

isolating procalcitonin 3-116 from a plasma or serum sample from the individual by contacting with a procalcitonin antibody bound to a support material suitable as a material for an affinity column,

washing said material to retain bound procalcitonin 3-116 peptide, and

determining the level of procalcitonin 3-116, wherein an increased level of procalcitonin 3-116 compared to healthy individuals is indicative of sepsis.

2. A method of claim 1 wherein said material is a beaded material.

3. A method of claim 1 wherein said material is beaded agarose.

4. A method of claim 1 wherein said material comprises magnetic beads.

5. A method for the detection of sepsis in an individual suspected of having sepsis, comprising:

contacting a plasma or serum sample from the individual with a procalcitonin antibody bound to a support material suitable as a material for an affinity column,

washing said material to retain bound procalcitonin 3-116 peptide, and

determining the level of procalcitonin 3-116, wherein an increased level of procalcitonin 3-116 compared to healthy individuals is indicative of sepsis.

6. A method of claim 5 wherein said material is a beaded material.

7. A method of claim 5 wherein said material is beaded agarose.

8. A method for the detection of sepsis in an individual suspected of having sepsis, comprising:

isolating procalcitonin 3-116 from a plasma or serum sample from the individual by contacting with a procalcitonin antibody bound to an affinity matrix,

washing said material to retain bound procalcitonin 3-116 peptide, and

determining the level of procalcitonin 3-116, wherein an increased level of procalcitonin 3-116 compared to healthy individuals is indicative of sepsis.

9. A method for the detection of sepsis in an individual suspected of having sepsis, comprising:

contacting a plasma or serum sample from the individual with a procalcitonin antibody bound to a support material suitable as a material for affinity isolation,

washing said material to retain bound procalcitonin 3-116 peptide, and

determining the level of procalcitonin 3-116, wherein an increased level of procalcitonin 3-116 compared to healthy individuals is indicative of sepsis.
