Abstract

A computer-implemented method of displaying a pane in a user interface includes two display modes. In the first display mode, the pane is displayed in the user interface, wherein display of the pane persists regardless of a position of a pointer icon in the user interface, and display of the pane ceases in response to selection of an indicator. In the second display mode, the pane is displayed in the user interface, wherein display of the pane persists while the pointer icon is positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane, and display of the pane ceases in response to detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane.

Claims (87)

1. A computer-implemented method of displaying a pane in a user interface, comprising:

in a user interface, displaying an indicator corresponding to an undisplayed pane;

detecting a first selection of the indicator using a pointer icon;

in response to detecting the first selection of the indicator, displaying the pane in the user interface for a first time, wherein display of the pane persists regardless of a position of the pointer icon in the user interface;

while displaying the pane for the first time in response to detecting the first selection, detecting a second selection of the indicator using the pointer icon;

in response to detecting the second selection of the indicator, ceasing to display the pane for a first time;

after the pane has ceased to display for the first time:

while the pane is not displayed, detecting positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator corresponding to the pane, without detecting selection of the indicator;

in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, displaying the pane in the user interface for a second time, wherein display of the pane persists while the pointer icon is positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane;

while displaying the pane for the second time in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane; and

in response to detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane, ceasing to display the pane for a second time.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator comprises an icon.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator is situated at a location along the perimeter of the user interface.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first selection of the indicator corresponds to clicking on the indicator with a pointing device while positioning the pointer icon over the indicator with the pointing device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second selection of the indicator corresponds to clicking on the indicator with a pointing device while positioning the pointer icon over the indicator with the pointing device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator corresponds to mousing over the indicator.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the user interface comprises content distinct from the pane;

in response to the first selection of the indicator, the pane is displayed adjacent to the content; and

in response to the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, the pane is superimposed on the content.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the user interface comprises a block of content distinct from the pane;

in response to the first selection of the indicator, the pane is displayed adjacent to the block of content; and

in response to the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, the pane is superimposed on the block of content.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein, when the pane is not displayed, the block of content is displayed adjacent to the indicator.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein, in response to the first selection of the indicator, the pane is displayed such that a first side of the pane is adjacent to the indicator and a second side of the pane opposite to the first side is adjacent to the block of content.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pane includes a user input field to filter displayed content in the block of content.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the block of content includes a list of items; and

the pane includes a user input field to modify the list of items.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the block of content includes a list of items; and

the pane includes a link to a user interface to add an item to the list.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the block of content includes a list of items; and

the pane includes a list of recent changes to the list of items.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pane includes one or more links to one or more respective portions of the user interface.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the user interface comprises a block of content having first and second dimensions, the first and second dimensions having respective first and second values when the pane is not displayed;

in response to the first selection of the indicator, the first dimension of the block of content is reduced to a value less than the first value and the pane is displayed adjacent to the block of content; and

in response to the second selection of the indicator, the first dimension of the block is restored to the first value.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein:

in response to the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, the pane is superimposed on the block of content, wherein the first dimension of the block remains at the first value.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the user interface displays a list of items distinct from the pane; and

the pane comprises a user input field to filter items displayed in the list.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the items in the list of items comprise work items in an agile software development project.

20. A computer system comprising:

memory;

a display;

one or more processors; and

one or more programs stored in the memory and configured for execution by the one or more processors, the one or more programs comprising:

instructions to display, in a user interface, an indicator corresponding to an undisplayed pane;

instructions to detect a first selection of the indicator using a pointer icon;

instructions to display the pane in the user interface for a first time, in response to detecting the first selection of the indicator, including instructions to continue to display the pane regardless of a position of the pointer icon in the user interface;

instructions to detect, while displaying the pane for the first time in response to the first selection, a second selection of the indicator using the pointer icon;

instructions to cease to display the pane for a first time, in response to detecting the second selection of the indicator;

instructions to detect, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator corresponding to the pane, without detecting selection of the indicator, while the pane is not displayed;

instructions to display, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, the pane in the user interface for a second time, in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, including instructions to continue to display the pane while the pointer icon is positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane;

instructions to detect, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, while displaying the pane for the second time in response to the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane; and

instructions to cease to display the pane for a second time, in response to detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane.

21. A computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs configured to be executed by a computer system, the one or more programs comprising:

instructions to display, in a user interface, an indicator corresponding to an undisplayed pane;

instructions to detect a first selection of the indicator using a pointer icon;

instructions to display the pane in the user interface for a first time, in response to detecting the first selection of the indicator, including instructions to continue to display the pane regardless of a position of the pointer icon in the user interface;

instructions to detect, while displaying the pane for the first time in response to the first selection, a second selection of the indicator using the pointer icon;

instructions to cease to display the pane for a first time, in response to detecting the second selection of the indicator;

instructions to detect, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator corresponding to the pane, without detecting selection of the indicator, while the pane is not displayed;

instructions to display, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, the pane in the user interface for a second time, in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, including instructions to continue to display the pane while the pointer icon is positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane;

instructions to detect, after the pane has ceased to display for the first time, while displaying the pane for the second time in response to the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator, that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane; and

instructions to cease to display the pane for a second time, in response to detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane.

22. A computer-implemented method of displaying a pane in a user interface, comprising:

in a user interface, displaying an indicator corresponding to an undisplayed pane;

detecting positioning of a pointer icon over the indicator corresponding to the pane, without detecting selection of the indicator;

in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator,

displaying the pane in the user interface for a first time, wherein display of the pane persists while the pointer icon is positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane;

while displaying the pane for the first time in response to detecting the positioning of the pointer icon over the indicator,

detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane; and

in response to detecting that the pointer icon is no longer positioned over the indicator or within the perimeter of the pane,

ceasing to display the pane for a first time

after the pane has ceased to display for the first time:

detecting a first selection of the indicator using a pointer icon;

in response to detecting the first selection of the indicator,

displaying the pane in the user interface for a second time, wherein display of the pane persists regardless of a position of the pointer icon in the user interface;

while displaying the pane for the second time in response to detecting the first selection,

detecting a second selection of the indicator using the pointer icon;

in response to detecting the second selection of the indicator, ceasing to display the pane for a second time.
