Abstract

A method for controlling a powertrain includes executing a shift, determining a plurality of input acceleration profiles for controlling an engine and an electric machine, determining an input speed profile, and controlling operation of the engine and the electric machine based upon the input speed profile.

Claims (31)

1. Method for controlling a powertrain comprising an electro-mechanical transmission mechanically-operatively coupled to an internal combustion engine and an electric machine adapted to selectively transmit mechanical power to an output member, the method comprising:

executing a shift of said transmission from a first operating range state to a second operating range state, comprising:

determining an input speed profile to transition an input speed of an input shaft of said transmission from an initial input speed corresponding to said first operating range state to a target input speed corresponding to said second operating range state;

determining an input acceleration immediate profile of said input shaft for controlling said electric machine based upon said input speed profile;

determining an input acceleration lead immediate profile for said controlling said engine based upon said input acceleration immediate profile and a lead time for said engine;

controlling operation of the engine based upon said input acceleration lead immediate profile; and

controlling operation of the electric machine based upon the input acceleration immediate profile;

wherein said lead time is based upon a difference in a response time for said engine to a response time for said electric machine.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining said input acceleration immediate profile for controlling said electric machine is further based upon an input acceleration lead predicted profile.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining said input speed profile comprises:

determining a total desired speed phase time;

determining a first sub-phase time based upon said total desired speed phase time;

determining a third sub-phase time based upon based upon said total desired speed phase time;

determining a second sub-phase time based upon said total desired speed phase time, said first sub-phase time, and said third sub-phase time; and

determining said input speed profile based upon said first sub-phase time, said second sub-phase time, said third sub-phase time, and a peak speed phased input acceleration.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said input speed profile includes an S-shaped profile based upon transitioning from said initial input speed to said target input speed and based upon an input acceleration lead predicted profile.

5. Apparatus for controlling a powertrain comprising an electro-mechanical transmission mechanically-operatively coupled to an internal combustion engine and an electric machine adapted to selectively transmit mechanical power to an output member, said apparatus comprising:

said transmission comprising a selectively applied clutch within said transmission transmitting torque to said output member; and

a shift execution module, including programming, in the course of executing a shift of said transmission from a first operating range state to a second operating range state, effective to

determine an input speed profile to transition an input speed of an input shaft of said transmission from an initial input speed corresponding to said first operating range state to a target input speed corresponding to said second operating range state,

determine an input acceleration immediate profile of said input shaft for controlling said electric machine based upon said input speed profile,

determine an input acceleration lead immediate profile for said controlling said engine based upon said input acceleration immediate profile and a lead time for said engine,

control operation of said engine based upon said input acceleration lead immediate profile, and

control operation of said electric machine based upon said input acceleration immediate profile;

wherein said lead time is based upon a difference in a response time for said engine to a response time for said electric machine.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said programming effective to determine said input speed profile comprises programming effective to:

determine a total desired speed phase time;

determine a first sub-phase time based upon said total desired speed phase time;

determine a third sub-phase time based upon said total desired speed phase time;

determine a second sub-phase time based upon said total desired speed phase time, said first sub-phase time, and said third sub-phase time; and

determine said input speed profile based upon said first sub-phase time, said second sub-phase time, said third sub-phase time, and a peak speed phased input acceleration.
