Abstract

Coatings containing particulate metal alloy are disclosed. The coatings provide corrosion protection to a substrate, such as a metal substrate. The coatings contain zinc-metal-containing alloy in flake form, most particularly an alloy flake of zinc and aluminum. The coating can be from compositions that are water-based or solvent-based. The compositions for providing the coating may also contain a substituent such as a water-reducible organofunctional silane, or a hexavalent-chromium-providing substance, or a titanate polymer, or a silica substance constituent. the coating may desirably be topcoated.

Claims (28)

1. A coating composition adapted for application to, and curing on, a substrate, which composition provides corrosion resistance as a cured coating on said substrate, the composition comprising:

zinc alloy in flake form comprising greater than 50 weight percent zinc in the alloy flake, and a balance of less than 50 weight percent of tin in the alloy flake;

at least one binding agent; and

water in an amount of 20% to 70% based upon the total weight of the composition.

2. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the zinc alloy comprises greater than 70 weight percent zinc.

3. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the zinc alloy comprises less than 30 weight percent tin.

4. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the binding agent is a silane binding agent.

5. The coating composition of claim 4 wherein the silane binding agent is a water-reducible organofunctional silane.

6. The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the binding agent is an inorganic binder.

7. A chromium-free and vanadium-free coating composition adapted for application to, and curing on, a substrate, which composition provides corrosion resistance as a cured coating on said substrate, the composition comprising:

zinc alloy in flake form comprising greater than 50 weight percent zinc in the alloy flake, and a balance of less than 50 weight percent of aluminum in the alloy flake;

at least one binding agent; and

water in an amount of 20% to 70% based upon the total weight of the composition.

8. The coating composition of claim 7 wherein the zinc alloy comprises greater than 80 weight percent zinc.

9. The coating composition of claim 8 wherein the zinc alloy comprises less than 20 weight percent aluminum.

10. The coating composition of claim 8 wherein the zinc alloy comprises greater than 85 weight percent zinc.

11. The coating composition of claim 9 wherein the zinc alloy comprises less than 15 weight percent aluminum.

12. The coating composition of claim 7 wherein the binding agent is a silane binding agent.

13. The coating composition of claim 12 wherein the silane binding agent is a water-reducible organofunctional silane.

14. The coating composition of claim 7 wherein the binding agent is an inorganic binder.

15. A chromium-free and vanadium-free coating composition adapted for application to, and curing on, a substrate, which composition provides corrosion resistance as a cured coating on said substrate, the composition comprising:

zinc alloy in flake form comprising greater than 50 weight percent zinc in the alloy flake, and a balance of less than 50 weight percent of non-zinc metal in the alloy flake, wherein the non-zinc metal is selected from the group consisting of aluminum, magnesium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and combinations thereof;

at least one binding agent; and

water in an amount of 20% to 70%, based upon the total weight of the composition.

16. The coating composition of claim 15 wherein the binding agent is a silane binding agent.

17. The coating composition of claim 16 wherein the silane binding agent is a water-reducible organofunctional silane.

18. The coating composition of claim 15 wherein the binding agent is an inorganic binder.

19. The coating composition of claim 15 wherein the zinc alloy is zinc-aluminum magnesium alloy.
