Abstract

An expanded bit map display (“EBMD”) ( 10 ) for displaying an image ( 14 ) and a method of creating such for mounting the EBMD ( 10 ) to a building surface ( 12 ) is provided. The EBMD ( 10 )is a large-scale colored light display comprising a plurality of light fixtures ( 16 ) mounted to the building surface ( 12 ). The building surface ( 12 ) may include a plurality of irregularities ( 18 ) that interferes with the uniformity of a substrate ( 36 ) of the building surface ( 12 ). The method broadly comprises the steps of (a) selecting the building surface on which to locate the display ( 20 ); (b) selecting at least one graphical image to be displayed ( 22 ), such as an animated picture or scrolling text; (c) selecting a type of light fixture to mount to the surface ( 24 ); (d) determining a plurality of locations on the surface where a plurality of light fixtures can be mounted ( 26 ); (e) selecting from the plurality of locations where the light fixtures can be mounted a plurality of optimal locations at which to mount the light fixtures for producing the selected image ( 28 ); (f) mounting the light fixtures to the surface ( 30 ); (g) assigning lighting characteristics to each light fixture ( 32 ); and (h) determining an angular orientation of each light fixture for optimal viewing of the image from a pre-determined vantage point ( 34 ).

Claims (32)

1 . A method of displaying an image on a surface having a plurality of irregularities associated therewith, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) determining a plurality of locations on the surface where a plurality of light fixtures can be mounted;

(b) selecting from the plurality of locations where the light fixtures can be mounted a plurality of optimal locations at which to mount the light fixtures for producing the selected image;

(c) individually mounting the light fixtures to the surface without interconnecting the fixtures with a common support; and

(d) assigning lighting characteristics to each light fixture.

2 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the irregularities are selected from the group consisting of: windows, vents, lettering, and pipes.

3 . The method as claimed in claim 2 , further including step (e) of determining an angular orientation of each light fixture for optimal viewing of the image from a pre-determined vantage point.

4 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a horizontal distance between the plurality of light fixtures varies among the light fixtures.

5 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a vertical distance between the plurality of light fixtures varies among the light fixtures.

6 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the determination of where light fixtures can be mounted on the surface is dependent on a size and location of the irregularities.

7 . The method as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the determination of where light fixtures can be mounted on the surface is further dependent on whether the light fixtures can be mounted to the irregularities.

8 . The method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the determination of the optimal location of the light fixtures is dependent on whether the surface includes any existing structure that facilitates mount of the light fixtures.

9 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the determination of the optimal location of the light fixtures is dependent on what locations will produce a proportional and balanced array.

10 . The method as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the determination of the proportional and balanced array includes consideration of a distance between the light fixtures.

11 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the light fixture is mounted directly to the surface.

12 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the light fixture is mounted to the surface via a mounting assembly.

13 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the lighting characteristics assigned to each light fixture include a color and an animation characteristic.

14 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the determination of the angular orientation of each light fixture is dependent on at least one preferred vantage point from which to view the display.

A method of creating an expanded bit map display operable to produce an image, the display comprising a plurality of light fixtures for mounting on a building surface having a plurality of irregularities associated therewith, wherein a determination of where to mount the light fixtures on the building surface comprises the steps of:

(a) accounting for a location and a size of each irregularity;

(b) accounting for a desired resolution of the image;

(c) consideration of a desired minimum and maximum separation between each light fixture;

(d) accounting for any existing structure that facilitates mounting of the light fixtures; and

(e) consideration of what locations for the light fixtures produces a proportional and balanced array.

16 . The method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein if the building surface is inside, further including step (f) of accounting for any inside lighting.

17 . The method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the irregularities are selected from the group consisting of: windows, vents, lettering, and pipes.

18 . The method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein accounting for the irregularity in step (a) further includes determining whether the light fixtures can be mounted to the irregularities.

19 . The method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the lighting fixtures are assigned lighting characteristics that include a color and an animation characteristic.

20 . A method of displaying a large-scale image comprising a plurality of light fixtures, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) electrically interconnecting the plurality of light fixtures to form a grid comprised of a plurality of rows and columns;

(b) spacing the light fixtures such that a separation distance between each light fixture is no less than two times a width of the light fixture and no more than fifty times the width of the light fixture; and

(c) assigning lighting characteristics to each light fixture based on the light fixture's position in the grid.
