Abstract

A system and method for displaying publication information for search results. User input is received to perform a search of a communications network. Search results are generated in response to the user input. A content date is determined for content included in each of the search results. The search results and the content date associated with each of the search results is displayed.

Claims (38)

1. A method for displaying publication information for search results, the method comprising:

receiving user input to perform a search of a communications network, wherein the user input specifies search parameters including at least a content date;

generating search results associated with the content date in response to the user input;

determining, in response to generation of the search results, one or more content dates for content included in each of the search results, the one or more content dates include at least a publication date and a post date, wherein determining comprises analyzing the content included in each of the search results to compile one or more publication dates and one or more post dates, wherein the analysis is performed using a key word search of a body of the content and a crawler analyzing source code, embedded information, and electronic data of the content and a posting web site;

displaying the search results and the one or more content dates associated with each of the search results, wherein the search results display a difference determined between the publication date and the post date in response to determining the publication date and the post date, and wherein the search results display a history for (1) each revision of associated subject matter and (2) posting of the content; and

notifying a user in the search results if the one or more content dates are inconclusive by marking the one or more content dates.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

limiting the search results based on at least one of the one or more content dates corresponding to a time period included in the user input.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising:

excluding search results in response to determining the one or more content dates and determining the one or more content dates do not correspond to one or more ranges specified in the user input.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the history is displayed as an expandable icon next to the search results.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the history displays each of a plurality of revisions, and each of a plurality of postings of the content.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the post date is determined utilizing one or more copies of the content to determine whether the content has been altered.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the search results are shown in a chronological order.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the history is displayed in columns associated with each of the search results.

9. A server for displaying publication information for search results, the server comprising:

a processor for executing modules stored in memory;

a memory for storing the modules for execution including:

a search engine operable to receive input from a client, the input specifies search parameters including at least a content date, the search engine operable to perform a search of a communications network utilizing the search parameters and generate search results for the client;

a crawler in communication with the search engine, the crawler operable to determine, in response to generation of the search results, one or more content dates for content included in each of the search results, the one or more content dates include at least a publication date and a post date, wherein determining comprises analyzing the content included in each of the search results to compile one or more publication dates and one or more post dates, wherein the analysis is performed using a key word search of a body of the content and a crawler analyzing source code, embedded information, and electronic data of the content and a posting web site; and

publication logic in communication with the crawler, the publication logic operable to display the one or more content dates for each of the search results based on the user input, wherein the search results display a determined difference between the publication date and the post date in response to determining the publication date and the post date, wherein the search results display a history for (1) each revision, and (2) posting of the content, and wherein the search results indicate if the one or more content dates are inconclusive by marking the one or more content dates.

10. The server according to claim 9 , wherein the one or more content dates includes a publication date the content was first generated and a post date the content was first posted to the communications network, and wherein the history displays previous and subsequent publication dates and post dates determined by a network crawler archiving content across networks.

11. The server according to claim 9 , wherein the communications network is the Internet, wherein the client executes a browser to communicate with the server through a network connection, wherein the history is displayed as an expandable icon next to the search results.

12. The server according to claim 9 , wherein the publication logic limits the search results displayed to the user in response to determining the one or more content dates and determining the one or more content dates do not correspond to one or more ranges specified in the user input.

13. The server according to claim 9 , wherein the publication logic displays the search results chronologically based on the one or more content dates of each of the search results.

14. A server for displaying publication information for search results, the server comprising:

a processor for executing a set of instructions of a search engine; and

a memory in communication with the process for storing the set of instructions, wherein the set of instructions are executed by the processor to:

receive user input to perform a search of a communications network, wherein the user input specifies search parameters including at least a content date;

generate search results associated with the content date in response to the user input;

determine, in response to generation of the search results, one or more content dates for content included in each of the search results, wherein the one or more content dates include at least a publication date and a post date, wherein determining comprises analyzing the content included in each of the search results to compile one or more publication dates and one or more post dates, wherein the analysis is performed using a key word search of a body of the content and a crawler analyzing source code, embedded information, and electronic data of the content and a posting web site;

display the search results and the one or more content dates associated with each of the search results, wherein the search results display a determined difference between the publication date and the post date in response to determining the publication date and the post date, and wherein the search results display a history for (1) each revision of associated subject matter and (2) posting of the content; and

affirmatively notify a user in the search results if the one or more content dates are inconclusive.

15. The server according to claim 14 , wherein the set of instructions is further executed to:

prioritize the search results based on the one or more content dates of each of the search results.

16. The server according to claim 14 , wherein the set of instructions is further executed to:

display the history associated with each of the search results as an expandable icon,

wherein the history displays each of a plurality of revisions, and each of a plurality of postings of the content.
