Abstract

A cable-barrier system that includes an anchor-body and terminal post which receive and retain one or more anchor-cables and are anchored to counter balance the force applied to the anchor body by one or more barrier-cables. The system also allows for the release of the anchor-cables during a collision with a vehicle.

Claims (24)

1. A terminal post for a cable-barrier which includes:

an upright cable-portion including an aperture, having an open top end, which is releasably receiving and retaining one or more barrier-cables; and

an anchor-body attached to said cable portion and including an aperture in the form of a slot releasably receiving and retaining one or more anchor-cables distinct from said one or more barrier-cables, the one or more anchor-cables releasably received and retained within the slot, the slot including a mouth at the bottom end thereof through which said one or more anchor-cables are configured to slideably exit, upon application of a downward force on said one or more anchor-cables, to slideably release said anchor-cables from the anchor-body, and wherein the one or more anchor-cables are each anchored to a footing so as to counter balance the force applied to the terminal post by said one or more barrier-cables;

wherein, upon collision of a vehicle with said cable-barrier in such a way that a downward force is exerted on said one or more anchor-cables or said anchor-body, at least one of said anchor-cables and said barrier-cables slideably release from said slot in the anchor body or said aperture in the cable portion, respectively, thereby causing the other of the said anchor-cables or said barrier cables to slideably release from said slot in the anchor body or said aperture in the cable portion, respectively, so that said one or more anchor-cables and said one or more barrier-cables are both released from said cable-portion and said anchor-body respectively to release the anchor-body from the footing.

2. The terminal post as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aperture of the cable-portion is a slot.

The terminal post as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the cable-portion slot has a mouth at the top end of the post through which said one or more barrier-cables are configured to exit upon application of a vertical force on said one or more barrier-cables, to release said one or more barrier-cables from the cable-portion.

4. The terminal post as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aperture of the anchor-body is a slot.

5. The terminal post as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the anchor-body slot includes a mouth at the bottom end thereof through which said anchor-cables are configured to exit upon application of a vertical force on said one or more anchor-cables, to release said anchor-cables from the anchor-body.

6. The terminal post as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the anchor-body includes at least two arms which extend the anchor-body from the post.

7. The terminal post as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the arms position the anchor-body on the post so the anchor body faces substantially the opposite direction to the direction in which the barrier-cables extend away from the post.

8. The terminal post as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one or more anchor-cables are anchored to a support surface.

9. The terminal post as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the one or more anchor-cables are anchored to the support surface for reducing any substantially upward force exerted by the anchor-cable at the anchor point(s).

10. The terminal post as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the one or more anchor-cables are attached to:

at least two points along a strut running substantially parallel to the support surface, and which is connected to the ground such that at least some of any substantially upward force can be converted to a sheer force which is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strut.

11. The terminal post as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the strut prevents the mid-point of the anchor-cables from lifting away from the ground upon application of a force.

12. A cable-barrier system which includes:

at least one terminal post, as claimed in claim 1 ;

a plurality of non-terminal posts capable of receiving and retaining at least one cable therein;

one or more barrier-cables retained in the terminal and non-terminal posts; and

one or more anchor-cables retained by said at least one terminal post and anchored to a support surface so as to counter balance the force applied to the at least one terminal post by said barrier-cables.

13. A terminal post for a cable-barrier which includes:

an upright cable-portion including strain plates and an aperture, having an open top end, which is releasably receiving and retaining one or more barrier-cables; and

an anchor-body attached to said strain plates and including an aperture in the form of a slot releasably receiving and retaining one or more anchor-cables distinct from said one or more barrier-cables, the one or more anchor-cables releasably received and retained within the slot, the slot including a mouth at the bottom end thereof through which said one or more anchor-cables are configured to slideably exit, upon application of a downward force on said one or ore anchor-cables, to slideably release said anchor-cables from the anchor-body, and wherein the one or more anchor-cables are each anchored to a footing so as to counter balance the force applied to the terminal post by said one or more barrier-cables;

wherein, upon collision of a vehicle with said cable-barrier in such a way that a downward force is exerted on at least one of said anchor-cables or said anchor-body, at least one of said anchor-cables and said barrier-cables slideably release from said slot in the anchor body or said aperture in the cable portion, respectively, thereby causing the other of the said anchor-cables or said barrier cables to slideably release from said slot in the anchor body or said aperture in the cable portion, respectively, so that said at least one anchor-cable and said at least one barrier-cable are both slideably released from said cable-portion and said anchor-body respectively to release the anchor-body from the footing.
