Abstract

A shaped tab conductor configured to allow more incident light to strike a cell substrate, improving the photovoltaic efficiency of the cell. The shaped tab conductor is configured to reduce the amount of incident light that is blocked by the tab from reaching the surface of the cell substrate. The tab may also be configured to redirect light reflected from the cell surface back to the cell surface. The cross-section of the tab conductor may be polygonal, such as a rhombus, with at least one generally planar surface that forms an acute angle with the substrate.

Claims (14)

1. A photovoltaic cell comprising:

a photosensitive substrate having a top surface; and

a plurality of tab conductors extending in a first direction for a first distance in electrical communication with the top surface of the substrate, at least one of the plurality of tab conductors having a cross-sectional shape in a second direction transverse to the first direction, the cross-sectional shape extending for a second distance less than the first distance and having a plurality of surfaces, at least one of the surfaces being substantially planar, where the at least one planar surface forms an acute angle with the top surface of the substrate, the angle being greater than about zero degrees and less than about ninety degrees.

2. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of fingers in electrical contact with the substrate;

a plurality of bus bars in electrical contact with the fingers, each of the plurality of tab conductors being in electrical contact with at least one of the bus bars; and

a plurality of solder points securing the at least one tab conductor to at least one of the bus bars.

3. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 2 , wherein at least one length segment of the at least one tab conductor is adjacent to two solder points and is not in contact with any solder point.

4. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 2 , wherein at least one of the solder points secures the at least one tab conductor to the at least one bus bar at a tab conductor portion, the tab conductor portion being partially exposed.

5. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 1 , wherein the cross-sectional shape of the at least one tab conductor is a polygon.

6. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 5 , wherein the cross-sectional shape of the at least one tab conductor is a rhombus.

7. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 1 , wherein the aspect ratio of the at least one tab conductor is less than two.

8. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 1 wherein the cross-sectional shape of the at least one tab conductor includes a second surface that is curved and concave.

9. A photovoltaic cell according to claim 1 wherein the cross-sectional shape of the at least one tab conductor includes a second surface that is curved and convex.
