Abstract

Disclosed is a temporally threaded copyright management information watermark where fragile watermarks containing CMI are spread throughout a digital work temporally. In one embodiment of this invention, the copyright management information is divided into a multitude of copyright management information subparts; the copyright management subparts are applied to fragile sub-watermarks; and fragile watermarks are applied to temporally separated portions of the digital work.

Claims (58)

1. A tangible computer readable medium containing a temporally threaded copyright management information watermark applied to a digital work comprising:

a) copyright management information divided into a multitude of copyright management information subparts;

b) a multitude of fragile sub-watermarks spread across said digital work, said “digital work” divided into a multitude of temporally separated portions, said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” applied to at least two of said “multitude of temporally separated portions,” at least two of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” embedding at least one of said “multitude of copyright management information subparts” into said digital work.

2. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein said digital work is one of the following:

a) digital video;

b) digital audio;

c) digital information; and

d) digital text.

3. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein said “multitude of temporally separated portions” spans the complete said “digital work.”

4. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein said “multitude of temporally separated portions” spans a part of said “digital work.”

5. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein said “copyright management information” includes at least one of the following:

a) a title identifying said “digital work;”

b) other information identifying said “digital work;”

c) information set forth on a notice of copyright;

d) a name of an author of said “digital work;”

e) other identifying information about an author of said “digital work;”

f) the name of a copyright owner of said “digital work;”

g) other identifying information about a copyright owner of said “digital work;”

h) the name of a performer whose performance is fixed in said “digital work;”

i) other identifying information about a performer whose performance is fixed in said “digital work;”

j) the name of a writer, performer, or director who is credited in said “digital work;”

k) other identifying information about, a writer, performer, or director who is credited in said “digital work;”

l) terms and conditions for use of said “digital work;”

m) identifying numbers referencing other copyright management information;

n) symbols referencing other copyright management information;

o) numbers referencing other copyright management information; and

p) links referencing other copyright management information.

6. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of temporally separated portions” includes at least one of the following:

a) a frame;

b) an MPEG I frame;

c) an MPEG P frame;

d) an MPEG B frame;

e) a multitude of frames;

f) a sub-frame;

g) a distribution unit; and

h) an audio segment.

7. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 4 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” contains a uniquely identifying symbol or code.

8. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” was created using non-optimum motion vector technique.

9. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” was created using a minor rate control variation technique.

10. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” was created using a noise-tolerant watermark technique.

11. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” was created using a watermarking technique that uses low-order bit variation in AC or DC coefficients.

12. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said “multitude of fragile sub-watermarks” was created using a watermarking technique that uses low amplitude blurry symbols.

13. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 1 , wherein said “digital work” also has at least one forensic watermark.

14. A tangible computer readable medium comprising:

a) a digital work, said “digital work” having:

i) at least one substantial portion, each of said “at least one substantial portion” having:

(1) a beginning,

(2) an end; and

(3) a multitude of portions distributed between said beginning and said end;

b) copyright management information, said copyright management information including a multitude of copyright management information sub-parts;

c) forensic information, said forensic information including tracing information;

d) a weak copyright management information watermark layer configured to embed at least one of said multitude of copyright management information sub-parts in one of said multitude of portions; and

d) a forensic watermark layer configured to embed at least part of said forensic information in one of said multitude of portions.

15. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 14 , further including:

a) copy control information; and

d) a copy control watermark layer configured to embed at least part of said copy control information in one of said multitude of portions.

16. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 14 , wherein at least part of said weak copyright management information watermark layer and at least part of said forensic watermark layer are combined.

17. The tangible computer readable medium according to claim 14 , wherein said multitude of portions are temporally separated.
