Abstract

A utility knife includes a handle, a blade holder assembly, and a clamp assembly. The blade holder assembly is constructed and arranged to hold a blade at a position of use at one end of the handle. The clamp assembly is constructed and arranged to move between a clamp position wherein the clamp assembly applies a clamp force to side surfaces the blade and a release position wherein the clamp assembly releases the clamping force.

Claims (26)

1. A utility knife, comprising:

a handle;

a blade holder assembly constructed and arranged to hold a blade, the blade holder assembly being movable between a storage position and a position of use, the blade holder assembly comprising a manually engageable member movable relative to the handle to move the blade holder assembly between the storage position and the position of use, the blade holder assembly constructed and arranged to be releasably locked at the position of use wherein the blade projects outwardly from the handle at one end of the handle and to be released to enable the blade to be retracted into the handle; and

a clamp assembly constructed and arranged to move between a clamp position wherein the clamp assembly applies a clamp force to opposing side surfaces of the blade and a release position wherein the clamp assembly releases the clamping force,

wherein the clamp assembly comprises an indicator configured to provide a first indication to indicate to a user when the clamp assembly is in the clamp position and a second indication to indicate to the user when the clamp assembly is in the release position,

wherein the blade has at least one opening therein and the blade holder assembly has a blade engaging structure for being received in the opening of the blade, and

wherein the clamp assembly is operatively independent from the blade engaging structure of the blade holder assembly.

2. The utility knife of claim 1 , wherein the clamp assembly comprises a manually engageable actuator portion and a support portion.

3. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein the clamp assembly further comprises a surface portion of the handle.

4. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein the actuator portion is manually actuatable to move the clamp assembly between the clamp position and the release position.

5. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein the handle comprises a first handle portion and a second handle portion joined to each other to define a slot therebetween, and wherein the slot is constructed and arranged to receive the blade therein.

6. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein the support portion is constructed and arranged to apply clamp force to side surfaces of the blade holder assembly.

7. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein the support portion comprises a recess constructed and arranged to receive a first portion of the actuator portion therewithin.

8. The utility knife of claim 1 , wherein the handle comprises an opening constructed and arranged to receive a second portion of the actuator portion therewithin, wherein the second portion is configured to move within the opening to move the clamp assembly between the clamp position and the release position.

9. The utility knife of claim 1 , wherein the indication is visual indication.

10. The utility knife of claim 2 , wherein cam surface portions of the first handle portion are constructed and arranged to engage with cam surface portions of the support portion, wherein the relative movement of the cam surface portions forces the clamp assembly to apply clamp force.

11. The utility knife of claim 10 , wherein the actuator portion is movable between a first position and a second position, wherein the movement of the actuator portion from the first position to the second position cams the cam surface portions of the support portion away from the cam surface portions of the first handle portion to apply the clamp force to side surfaces the blade holder assembly.

12. The utility knife of claim 2 , further comprises a connector portion.

13. The utility knife of claim 12 , wherein the handle comprises a barrel and a body portion.

14. The utility knife of claim 13 , wherein the clamp assembly further comprises a surface portion of the barrel.

15. The utility knife of claim 12 , wherein the actuator portion is manually actuatable to move the clamp assembly between the clamp position and the release position.

16. The utility knife of claim 12 , wherein the blade is a multi-blade blade assembly.

17. The utility knife of claim 16 , wherein the support portion is constructed and arranged to apply clamp force to the side surfaces of the blade assembly.

18. The utility knife of claim 16 , wherein cam surface portions of the support portion are constructed and arranged to engage with cam surface portions of the connector portion, wherein the relative movement of the cam surface portions forces the clamp assembly to apply clamp force to the side surfaces of the blade assembly.

19. The utility knife of claim 18 , wherein the actuator portion is movable between a first position and a second position, wherein the movement of the actuator portion from the first position to the second position cams the cam surface portions of the connector portion away from the cam surface portions of the support portion to apply the clamp force to the side surfaces the blade assembly.

20. The utility knife of claim 13 , wherein the body portion comprises an opening constructed and arranged to receive a manually engageable portion of the actuator portion therewithin, wherein the manually engageable portion is configured to move within the opening to move the clamp assembly between the clamp position and the release position.
