Passive millimeter wave spectrometer for remote detection of chemical plumes
Systems and methods for the passive measurement of spectral lines from the absorption or emission by polar molecules. The system includes mmW front-end assembly, back-end electronics, and data acquisition hardware and software was assembled. The method relates to methods for processing multi-channel radiometric data from passive mmW detection systems.
1. A method for processing terrestrial millimeter waves of target molecules, comprising:
receiving millimeter waves from a sample containing the target molecules and a reference;
acquiring data via switching between the sample and the reference; and
processing acquired data by:
normalizing the amplitude;
subtracting the frequency domain scene;
integrating in the time domain; and
subtracting out the time domain baseline;
wherein the detection sensitivity is in the milli-Kelvin range.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acquired data is separated into a plurality of channels and following processing of the acquired data, the channels are stacked.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the processing step of digital filtering in the time domain.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the processing step of least square fitting of a known line shape to frequency cross sections of temporal data.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising preprocessing steps of,
converting the millimeter waves to intermediary frequency range waves;
amplifying the intermediary frequency waves;
splitting the data into a plurality of channels; and
converting the intermediate frequency range signal into video frequency range.
6. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the processing is done substantially in real-time.
7. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising at least one step of post-processing modification of the millimeter waves.
8. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the millimeter waves are preprocessed by converting the millimeter waves into intermediate frequency range waves.
9. The method as defined in claim 8 wherein the preprocessing further includes converting the intermediate frequency range waves into video frequency waves.
10. The method as defined in claim 9 wherein the intermediate frequency waves are split into a plurality of signals each passed through a bandpass filter prior to conversion to video frequency waves.
