Abstract

Methods and apparatus for communicating Fiber Channel frames between a private loop device and an Ethernet link through a Fiber Channel private loop device interconnect system. In the preferred embodiments, the Fiber Channel private loop device interconnect system I a fabric or an intelligent bridging hub. In one aspect of this invention, a Fiber Channel private loop device is storage device which contains JBOSD or RAIDS. Preferably, the interconnect system includes routing filter incoming Arbitrated Loop physical addresses (ALPAs) to determine which Fiber Channel frames must attempt to be routed through the fabric. Numerous topologies of interconnect systems may be achieved.

Claims (43)

1. A system for interconnecting a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop having one or more directly attached Private Loop Devices and an ethernet link to communicate Fibre Channel frames, comprising:

a first Arbitrated Loop containing one or more private loop devices, wherein at least one private loop device is a storage device,

an Ethernet link,

a Fibre Channel private loop device interconnect system, the interconnect system including:

a first port containing a first port control module coupled to the first Arbitrated Loop,

the first port control module containing a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop Port State Machine including an active L_Port, implementing the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop protocol, including the generation of arbitrate primitive signals (ARBs), open primitive signals (OPNs), and close primitive signals (Closes),

the first Loop Port State Machine providing point to point connection between the first port loop state machine and a private loop device on the first Arbitrated Loop,

route determination circuitry for selecting a route between the port control module and the ethernet link, and

a connectivity apparatus coupled to the port control module and to the route determination apparatus for switching frames between the port control module and the ethernet link under control of the route determination apparatus,

whereby Fibre Channel frames are transferred between a private loop device on the first Arbitrated Loop and the Ethernet link.

2. The interconnection system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device includes JBODs.

3. The interconnection system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device includes RAIDs.

4. The interconnection system of claim 2 , wherein the ethernet link connects Fibre Channel to Ethernet.

5. The interconnection system of claim 2 , wherein the system connects Fibre Channel to Fast Ethernet.

6. The interconnection system of claim 2 , wherein the system connects Fibre Channel to Gigabit Ethernet.

7. A system for interconnecting a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop having one or more directly attached Private Loop Devices and a bridge to communicate Fibre Channel frames, comprising:

a first Arbitrated Loop containing one or more private loop devices, at least one private loop device being a storage device,

a bridge,

a Fibre Channel private loop device interconnect system, the interconnect system including:

a first port containing a first port control module coupled to the first Arbitrated Loop,

a second port coupled to the bridge,

the first port control modules containing a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop Port State Machine including an active L_port, implementing the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop protocol, including the generation of arbitrate primitive signals (ARBs), open primitive signals (OPNs), and close primitive signals (Closes),

the first Loop Port State Machine providing point to point connection between the first port loop state machine and a private loop device on the first Arbitrated Loop,

route determination circuitry for selecting a routes between the port control module and the bridge, and

a connectivity apparatus coupled to the port control module and the bridge for switching frames between the port control module and the bridge under control of the route determination circuitry,

whereby Fibre Channel frames are transferred between a private loop device on the first Arbitrated Loop and the bridge.

8. The interconnection system of claim 7 , wherein the bridge is a SCSI to Fibre Channel bridge.

9. The interconnection system of claim 7 , wherein the bridge is an ethernet bridge.

10. The interconnection system of claim 7 , wherein the bridge is a Fast ethernet bridge.

11. The interconnection system of claim 7 , wherein the bridge is a Gigabit ethernet bridge.

12. The interconnection system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device includes JBODs.

13. The interconnection system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device includes RAIDs.

14. A method for sending frames between a private loop device on an Arbitrated Loop and the Ethernet via an interconnect system comprising the steps of:

receiving a Fibre Channel frame from a storage private loop device on an Arbitrated Loop at a first f Fibre Channel port coupled to the interconnect system; the first port containing a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop Port State Machine including an active L_Port, implementing the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop protocol, including the generation of arbitrate primitive signals (ARBs), the open primitive signals (OPNs), and the close primitive signals (Closes), the first Loop Port State Machine providing point to point connections between the first port loop state machine and a private loop device on the first Arbitrated Loop;

determining a route between the first Fibre Channel port and a bridge module coupled to the interconnect system;

transferring the Fibre Channel frame from the Fibre Channel port through a connectivity apparatus to the bridge module; and

converting the Fibre Channel frame to a format recognized by an Ethernet network.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising transmitting the frame to an Ethernet network.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the bridge module is an Ethernet bridge.
