Abstract

A PLL receives an indicator indicating that it is to operate at a different operating frequency than a current operating frequency. A control word is selected from a set of linear control words based upon the different operating frequency. A capacitance of a variable capacitor of a voltage-controlled oscillator is adjusted based upon the control word. The variable capacitor is monotonic and non-linear relative to the set of linear control words.

1. A method comprising;

Receiving an indicator that phase-locked loop (PLL) is to operate at a different operating frequency than a current operating frequency;

Selecting a first control word of a set of linear control words based upon the different operating frequency and based on a linear interpolation of the available range of control words that correspond to a linear range of PLL operating frequencies, wherein in the first control word is determinable by dividing the difference between the different operating frequency and a minimum operating frequency by the difference between a maximum operating frequency and the minimum operating frequency, and multiplying the result by the number of control words included in the set of linear control words; and

Adjusting a capacitance of a variable capacitor of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) based upon the first control word, the variable capacitor being monotonic and non-linear relative to the set of linear control words.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein
