Abstract

Compositions and methods for their use are presented that substantially increase the rate of inactivation of microbiological organisms, especially those resistant to inactivation from free halogen based sanitizers, and oxidation of oxidation resistant organic based compounds in aqueous solution. Aquatic facilities susceptible to accumulation of organic N-chloramines, cyanuric acid and other oxidation resistant compounds, as well as oxidation resistant parasitic organisms such as cryptosporidium and Giardia, obtain dramatic improvements in the rate of oxidation and subsequent inactivation of these undesirable contaminants

Claims (26)

1 . A method for the increased rate of inactivation of microbiological organisms in an aqueous solution of an aquatic facility, the method comprising:

applying to said aqueous solution an effective amount of peroxymonosulfate,

applying to said peroxymonosulfate treated aqueous solution an effective amount of a transition metal catalyst comprising at least one of cobalt and ruthenium; and

treating the aqueous solution with a sanitizer selected from at least one of a free halogen donor and chlorine dioxide to obtain a total sanitizer concentration from about 0.2 to 10 ppm measured as Cl 2 .

2 . A method for the increased rate of inactivation of microbiological organisms in an aqueous solution of an aquatic facility, the method comprising:

applying to said aqueous solution an effective amount of peroxymonosulfate,

applying to said peroxymonosulfate treated aqueous solution an effective amount of a transition metal catalyst comprising at least one of: cobalt, ruthenium, vanadium, iron, cerium, manganese, and nickel; and

treating the aqueous solution with a sanitizer selected from at least one of a free halogen donor and chlorine dioxide to obtain a total sanitizer concentration from about 0.2 to 10 ppm measured as Cl 2 .

3 . A method for the increased rate of inactivation of microbiological organisms in an aqueous solution of an aquatic facility while mammals are present, the method comprising:

applying to said aqueous solution an effective amount of persulfate donor,

applying to said persulfate donor treated aqueous solution an effective amount of a transition metal catalyst comprising at least one of: iron, copper, silver and manganese,

treating the aqueous solution with a sanitizer selected from at least one of a free halogen donor and chlorine dioxide to obtain a total sanitizer concentration from about 0.2 to 10 ppm measured as Cl 2 ; and

sustaining a persulfate concentration of less than 2 ppm.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst concentration is from 2 ppb to 200 ppb measured as elemental metal.

5 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 wherein the catalyst concentration is from 5 to 500 ppb measured as elemental metal.

6 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , wherein the microbiological organisms are parasitic.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the parasitic organism is cryptosporidium.

8 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , wherein the microbiological organisms are bacterial.

9 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , wherein the microbiological organisms are viral.

10 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , wherein the microbiological organisms are algae.

11 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , further comprising an optional coagulant.

12 . The method of claims 1 , 2 , and 3 , further comprising a ligand forming complexing agent that stabilizes the catalyst.

13 . A method for the inactivation of microbiological organisms including cryptosporidium in an aqueous solution of an aquatic facility, the method comprising:

applying to said aqueous solution an effective amount of peroxymonosulfate,

contacting the peroxymonosulfate treated aqueous solution with an effective amount of transition metal catalyst comprising at least one of cobalt and ruthenium,

treating the aqueous solution with a sanitizer selected from at least one of a free halogen donor and chlorine dioxide to obtain a total free sanitizer concentration from about 0.2 to 10 ppm measured as Cl 2 .
