Multifunctional biocomposite additive compositions and methods
Biocomposite compositions and compositions, which include dried distillers solubles, and which can be used in making biocomposite compositions are described. Methods for preparing the compositions are also described.
1. A thermoplastic additive composition comprising:
about 30 wt-% to about 90 wt-% of a post ethanol fermentation byproduct consisting essentially of dried distiller's solubles;
about 0.001 wt-% to about 20 wt-% crosslinking agent;
about 5 wt-% to about 20 wt-% metal oxide; and
about 5 wt-% to about 50 wt-% fiber.
2. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide is selected from titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, stannous oxide and lead oxide.
3. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide is titanium dioxide.
4. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 1 , wherein the fiber is a cellulose fiber.
5. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 4 , wherein the cellulose fiber is obtained from a paper recycling stream.
6. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 1 , further comprising from about 1 wt-% to about 15 wt-% latex, acrylic latex or styrenated acrylic latex.
7. A thermoplastic additive composition comprising:
about 55 wt-% to about 65 wt-% dried distiller's solubles;
about 20 wt-% to about 30 wt-% cellulose fiber;
about 0.001 wt-% to about 20 wt-% crosslinking agent;
about 4 wt-% to about 12 wt-% titanium dioxide; and
about 3 wt-% to about 10 wt-% latex, acrylic latex, styrenated acrylic latex or a mixture thereof.
8. A method for producing a DDS biocomposite additive comprising:
combining a mixture comprising:
about 30 wt-% to about 90 wt-% a post fermentation byproduct consisting essentially of dried distiller's solubles;
about 5 wt-% to about 20 wt-% metal oxide; and
about 5 wt-% to about 50 wt-% fiber; and
drying the mixture in a pulsed drying gas stream using a pulse combustion dryer.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the metal oxide is selected from titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, stannous oxide and lead oxide.
10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the metal oxide is titanium dioxide.
11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fiber is a cellulose fiber.
12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the cellulose fiber is obtained from a paper recycling stream.
13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the mixture further comprises about 1 wt-% to about 10 wt-% latex, acrylic latex, styrenated acrylic latex or a mixture thereof.
14. A method for producing a DDS biocomposite additive comprising:
combining a mixture comprising:
about 55 to about 65 wt-% dried distiller's solubles;
about 20 to about 30 wt-% cellulose fiber;
about 4 to about 10 wt-% titanium dioxide; and
about 3 to about 10 wt-% latex, acrylic latex or styrenated acrylic latex; and
drying the mixture in a pulsed drying gas stream using a pulse combustion dryer.
15. A thermoplastic additive composition comprising about 30 wt-% to about 90 wt-%:
a post ethanol fermentation byproduct consisting essentially of dried distiller's solubles;
metal oxide; and
fiber.
16. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein; the metal oxide is about 2 wt-% to about 20 wt-%; and the fiber is about 5 wt-% to about 50 wt-%, based on a weight of the composition.
17. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein the dried distiller solubles has a moisture content of 0.5% to 15% by weight.
18. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein the dried distiller solubles is the post-fermentation byproduct of a corn-to-ethanol fermentation process.
19. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein the metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide, zinc oxide, and combinations thereof.
20. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein the fiber comprises cellulose fibers.
21. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , further comprising from about 1 wt-% to about 15 wt-% latex.
22. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , further comprising a drying agent from about 0.001 wt-% to about 1 wt-%.
23. The thermoplastic additive composition of claim 15 , wherein the drying agent is selected from the group consisting of zirconium oxide, copper oxide, cobalt oxide, iron oxide, ethylene oxide derivative or condensate, and combinations thereof.
