Anti-virus therapy for respiratory diseases
The present invention provides the use of IFN-β, an agent that increases the expression of IFN-β, or a polynucleotide which is capable of expressing IFN-β or said agent for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of rhinovirus-induced exacerbation of a respiratory disease selected from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, wherein said treatment is by airway delivery of said medicament, e.g. by use of an aerosol nebulizer. Also provided is IFN-λ for the same purpose.
1. A method of treating in an individual a rhinovirus-induced exacerbation of a respiratory disease selected from asthma and COPD, comprising administering to the lower respiratory tract an agent selected from the group consisting of:
(a) an agent that increases interferon-β (IFN-β) expression; or
(b) a polynucleotide which is capable of expressing such an agent or IFN-β,
wherein the administration results in suppression of rhinovirus replication in the individual.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein said respiratory disease is asthma.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein said respiratory disease is COPD.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the IFN-β comprises the sequence of human IFNβ-1a (SEQ ID NO: 2) or human IFNβ-1b (SEQ ID NO: 4).
5. The method of claim 2 wherein said respiratory disease is asthma and wherein said agent is administered simultaneously, separately or sequentially with an inhaled corticosteroid.
6. The method of claim 1 said agent is administered to the lung airways by means of an aerosol nebuliser.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is an agent that increases IFN-β expression.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is a polynucleotide capable of expressing IFN-β.
