Abstract

Methods and systems of attaching a radio transceiver to an antenna. At least some of the illustrative embodiments are systems comprising an antenna and an integrated circuit configured to operate as a radio transceiver. The antenna comprises a ground plane having a first edge surface, and an active element having a second edge surface. The ground plane and the active element are retained together such that the first and second edge surfaces are substantially coplanar and form an antenna edge. The integrated circuit is configured to operate as a radio transceiver, and the integrated circuit is mechanically coupled to the edge of the antenna and electrically coupled to the active element.

Claims (22)

1. A system comprising:

an antenna comprising:

a main mast, and

a dipole active element coupled to the main mast such that the active element is substantially perpendicular to the main mast; and

an integrated circuit configured to operate as a radio transceiver, wherein the integrated circuit is mechanically supported by the antenna between the active element and the main mast.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is coupled to the antenna by way of an adhesive, and electrically coupled to the antenna by way of a wire-bond.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is mechanically and electrically coupled to the antenna by way of a controlled collapse chip connection.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit further comprises a packaged integrated circuit with a plurality of pins.

5. The system according to claim 4 , wherein the pins of the packaged integrated circuit are soldered to the antenna.

6. The system according to claim 4 , further comprising a socket coupled to the antenna, and wherein the packaged integrated circuit couples to the antenna by way of the socket.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the antenna is a Yagi-Uda antenna.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is at least one selected from the group consisting of: radio frequency identification (RFID) reader; and a RFID circuit.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the antenna is at least one selected from the group consisting of: a folded dipole antenna; a bent dipole antenna; a parabolic antenna;

a Quagi antenna; biquad antenna; an egg-beater antenna; a quadrifilar antenna; a helix antenna; and a J-pole antenna.

10. A method comprising:

providing an antenna having a dipole active element coupled to a main mast such that the active element is substantially perpendicular to the man mast; and

mechanically attaching to the antenna an integrated circuit configured to operate as a radio transceiver, wherein the integrated circuit is supported by the active element and the main mast.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein mechanically attaching further comprises attaching at least one selected from the group consisting of: a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader; and a RFID circuit.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein mechanically attaching further comprises:

adhering the integrated circuit being a bare die integrated circuit to the antenna; and

electrically coupling by at least one selected from the group consisting of: wire bond; and controlled collapse chip connection.

13. The method according to claim 10 , wherein mechanically attaching further comprises coupling the integrated circuit being a packaged integrated circuit to a socket on the antenna.
