Abstract

A magnetic disk drive includes a switching regulator configured to generate an output voltage, and a magnetic disk control unit that receives the output voltage as a power supply and performs data write and read operations on a magnetic recording medium. The switching regulator includes a voltage conversion part configured to generate a second voltage by switching a first voltage, a smoothing part configured to smooth the second voltage to thus produce an output voltage, a control part configured to control the switching on the basis of a difference between the output voltage and a reference voltage to thus stabilize the output voltage, and a reference voltage changing part configured to change the reference voltage in accordance with an operation mode of the magnetic disk control unit.

Claims (17)

1 . A magnetic disk drive comprising:

a switching regulator configured to generate an output voltage; and

a magnetic disk control unit that receives the output voltage as a power supply and performs data write and read operations on a magnetic recording medium,

the switching regulator including:

a voltage conversion part configured to generate a second voltage by switching a first voltage;

a smoothing part configured to smooth the second voltage to thus produce an output voltage;

a control part configured to control the switching on the basis of a difference between the output voltage and a reference voltage to thus stabilize the output voltage; and

a reference voltage changing part configured to change the reference voltage in accordance with an operation mode of the magnetic disk control unit.

2 . The magnetic disk drive according to claim 1 , wherein the reference voltage changing part changes the reference voltage so that the output voltage is close to a minimum voltage of an operable voltage rage of the magnetic disk control unit when the magnetic disk control unit is in an inactive mode.

3 . The magnetic disk drive according to claim 1 , wherein the reference voltage changing part includes:

a resistor section having multiple resistors connected in series;

a switch section that selects one or more resistors to be used to divide the reference voltage from among the multiple resistors; and

a control section that detects the output voltage and controls the switch section on the basis of the output voltage thus detected.

4 . The magnetic disk drive according to claim 2 , wherein the reference voltage changing part includes:

a resistor section having multiple resistors connected in series;

a switch section that selects one or more resistors to be used to divide the reference voltage from among the multiple resistors; and

a control section that detects the output voltage and controls the switch section on the basis of the output voltage thus detected.
