Abstract

A method of producing a low-dust, fire retardant cellulose fiber material useful in producing insulation and other such products is provided. A liquid, comprising a solvent and at least one fire-retarding material soluble in that solvent, is applied to a cellulose source material, and the liquid is allowed to permeate into the cellulose source material. The liquid permeated material is dried to remove the solvent while the fire-retardant material remains in the cellulose source material. The dried fire-retardant cellulose source material is reduced in size and then de-dusted to produce a low to no dust, fire-retardant cellulose fiber material that has functionally equivalent fire-retardant properties as the dried fire-retardant cellulose source material before de-dusting.

Claims (36)

1. A method of producing a low-dust, fire-retardant cellulose fiber material, comprising:

applying a liquid comprising a solvent and at least one fire-retardant material soluble in the solvent to a cellulose source material;

allowing the liquid to permeate into the cellulose source material to form a liquid-permeated cellulose material;

drying the liquid-permeated cellulose material to remove the solvent, wherein an effective amount of the fire-retardant material remains in the cellulose source material, to form a dried, fire-retardant cellulose material;

reducing the dried, fire-retardant cellulose material in size to produce a reduced-size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material comprising cellulosic dust material comprising the fire retardant material absorbed in and adhered to the dust material; and

removing a major amount of said dust material from the reduced size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material by screening the cellulose fiber material to produce the low-dust, fire-retardant cellulose fiber material,

wherein

the entirety of the screened cellulose fiber material and the dust material comprise a higher amount of the fire retardant material than solely the screened cellulose fiber material, and

the entirety of the screened cellulose fiber material and the dust material has about the same level of fire retardant properties as only the screened cellulose fiber material to meet federal standards for fire-retardant insulation material.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least about 50% by volume of the dust material is removed.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein about 70-100% by volume of the dust material is removed.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein about 90-100% by volume of the dust material is removed.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the dust material comprises separating the reduced size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material from the dust material using a device having a screen and operable to cause movement of the cellulose fiber material on the screen.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the screen has a mesh ranging from about 14 mesh to about 200 mesh.

7. The method of claim 5 , comprising applying air to the reduced size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material on the screen to cause movement of said material.

8. The method of claim 5 , comprising moving the screen device or an element thereof to cause movement of the reduced size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein moving the screen device or element thereof comprises rotating the screen device or vibrating the screen device or element thereof.

10. A method of producing a low-dust, fire-retardant cellulosic material, comprising:

applying a liquid composition comprising a solvent and at least one fire-retardant material, to wet a cellulosic material;

drying the wetted cellulosic material to form a dried, fire-retardant cellulosic material;

reducing the dried, fire-retardant cellulosic material in size to produce a reduced-size, fire-retardant cellulosic material comprising cellulosic dust material comprising fire retardant material absorbed in and adhered to the dust material; and

screening the reduced size, fire-retardant cellulosic material to remove a major amount of said dust material and produce the low-dust, fire-retardant cellulosic material,

wherein

the entirety of the screened cellulosic material and the dust material comprise a higher amount of the fire retardant material than solely the screened cellulosic material, and

the entirety of the screened cellulosic material and the dust material has about the same level of fire retardant properties as only the screened cellulosic material to meet federal standards for fire-retardant insulation material.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising, after applying the liquid composition, allowing a period of time to elapse before drying the cellulosic material.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the period of time is 45 to 120 seconds.

13. A method of producing a low-dust, fire-retardant cellulose fiber material, comprising:

applying a liquid fire-retardant material to a cellulose source material to form a liquid-permeated cellulose material;

drying the liquid-permeated cellulose material to form a dried, fire-retardant cellulose material;

reducing the dried, fire-retardant cellulose material in size to produce a reduced-size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material comprising cellulosic dust material comprising the fire retardant material absorbed in and adhered to the dust material; and

screening the cellulose fiber material to remove at least 50% by volume of said dust material to produce the low-dust, fire-retardant cellulose fiber material

wherein

the entirety of the screened cellulose fiber material and the dust material comprise a higher amount of the fire retardant material than solely the screened cellulose fiber material, and

the entirety of the screened cellulose fiber material and the dust material has about the same level of fire retardant properties as only the screened cellulose fiber material to meet federal standards for fire-retardant insulation material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the reduced-size, dry fire-retardant cellulose fiber material comprises 8-15 wt % cellulosic dust material.
