Abstract

A glucose monitoring system, includes a glucose sensor strip or package of strips. The strip includes a substrate and a glucose monitoring circuit that has electrodes and a bodily fluid application portion of selected chemical composition. An antenna is integrated with the glucose sensor strip. A RFID sensor chip is coupled with the glucose sensor strip and the antenna. The chip has a memory containing digitally-encoded data representing calibration and/or expiration date information for the strip.

Claims (34)

1. An analyte monitoring system, comprising:

an analyte sensor;

an antenna integrated with the analyte sensor;

a radio frequency identification (RFID) sensor chip coupled with the analyte sensor and the antenna, the RFID sensor chip including a memory for storing digitally-encoded data representing a monitored analyte level detected by the analyte sensor; and

an RFID reader coupled to a housing and configured to transmit an radio frequency (RF) signal and to receive data from the RFID sensor chip, the RFID reader further configured to provide an RF power signal;

wherein the digitally encoded data representing the monitored analyte level is detected by the RFID reader based a backscattering radio wave from the RFID sensor chip when the RFID reader is positioned within a predetermined distance from the RFID sensor chip.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the antenna comprises one of a loop antenna or a dipole antenna.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the loop antenna comprises a conducting loop.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the conducting loop is disposed substantially around a perimeter of a circuit board electrically coupled to the analyte sensor.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the RFID reader housing includes a strip port.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the strip port is configured to receive an in vitro glucose test strip.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the analyte sensor is calibrated based on a blood glucose measurement from the in vitro glucose test strip.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the RFID reader housing includes a blood glucose meter.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores data representing one or more of a lot information associated with the analyte sensor, a calibration code associated with the analyte sensor, or an analyte sensor expiration information.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the RFID sensor chip propagates a backscattering radio wave when the RFID reader is positioned within the predetermined distance and within the RF power signal range from the RFID sensor chip.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined distance includes approximately 5 inches or less.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the RFID sensor chip and the RFID reader operate in an ultra high frequency (UHF) frequency band.

13. The system of claim 1 further including an output unit coupled to the RFID reader housing for outputting information associated with the monitored analyte level.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the output unit includes a display for displaying an indication related to the monitored analyte level.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the displayed indication includes a numerical value of the analyte level monitored by the analyte sensor.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the digitally encoded data representing the monitored analyte level includes a current analyte level data and one or more prior analyte level data stored in the memory.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrodes includes one or more of a working electrode, a counter electrode or a reference electrode.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor is an in vivo glucose sensor.

19. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second antenna integrated with the analyte sensor and coupled with the RFID sensor chip, wherein the antenna and the RFID sensor chip are disposed on a first surface of a printed circuit board substrate and the second antenna is disposed on a second surface of the printed circuit board substrate.

20. A method, comprising:

positioning a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader within a predetermined distance from an RFID sensor chip in electrical contact with an analyte sensor;

transmitting a radio frequency (RF) signal including a power signal; and

detecting a backscattering radio wave from the RFID sensor chip including digitally encoded data representing an analyte level monitored by the analyte sensor.

21. The method of claim 20 including outputting information associated with the digital encoded data.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein outputting information includes displaying a glucose value associated with the digitally encoded data.

23. The method of claim 20 including storing the digitally encoded data.

24. The method of claim 20 further including:

receiving a blood glucose measurement from an in vitro test strip; and

calibrating the analyte sensor based on the received blood glucose measurement.
