Method of treating depression
Methods for treatment of depression-related mood disorders in mammals, particularly humans are disclosed. The methods of the invention include administration of compounds capable of enhancing glutamate transporter activity in the brain of mammals suffering from depression. ATP-sensitive K + channel openers and β-lactam antibiotics are used to enhance glutamate transport and to treat depression-related mood disorders and depressive symptoms.
1. A method of treating a depression-related mood disorder in a human comprising administering to the human in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a K ATP channel opener wherein the opener is selected from the group consisting of diazoxide and iptakalim.
2. The method of claim 1 in which the mood disorder is Major Depressive Disorder.
3. A method of increasing glutamate uptake by brain astrocytes in a human suffering from depression comprising administering to the human in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a K ATP channel opener wherein the opener is selected from the group consisting of diazoxide and iptakalim.
4. A method of treating a depressive symptom in a human comprising administering to the human suffering from depression a therapeutically effective amount of a K ATP channel opener wherein the opener is selected from the group consisting of diazoxide and iptakalim.
5. The method of claim 4 in which the depressive symptom is selected from the group consisting of depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, psychomotor changes, fatigue, a sense of worthlessness, impaired concentration, and thoughts of death.
