Abstract

A gimbaled weapon system (GWS) is disclosed having a sighting system, a control unit, a weapon cradle for receiving a weapon, and an operator interface for the GWS located remotely from the weapon cradle and the sighting system. The weapon cradle is elevated using a first elevation drive. The weapon cradle is co-located with the sighting system as a unit in the GWS. The sighting system includes a thermal video camera and a visible spectrum video camera, the thermal video camera and the visible spectrum video camera each producing a video output. The thermal and visible spectrum video outputs are provided to the operator interface for the GWS for display on a display included in the operator interface.

Claims (12)

1. A gimbaled weapon system (GWS) comprising, in combination:

a sighting system, a control unit, a weapon cradle for receiving a weapon, and an operator interface for the GWS located remotely from the weapon cradle and the sighting system, and a display associated with the operator interface, wherein the weapon cradle is elevated using a first elevation drive and wherein the weapon cradle is co-located with the sighting system as a unit in the GWS;

wherein the sighting system includes a thermal video camera and a visible spectrum video camera, the thermal video camera and the visible spectrum video camera each producing a video output, wherein the thermal and visible spectrum video outputs are provided to the display associated with the operator interface; the display located remotely from the weapon cradle and the sighting system;

wherein the GWS further comprises a second elevation drive elevating the sighting system independently of the elevation of the weapon cradle by the first elevation drive, and wherein the operator interface includes a device for controlling movement of the sighting system in azimuth and elevation, such that the sighting system may track a target under operator control and provide thermal video or visible spectrum video of the target to the display of the remotely located operator interface completely independently of the elevation of the weapon cradle.

2. The GWS of claim 1 , wherein the sighting system further comprises a laser range finder.

3. The GWS of claim 1 , further comprising a display provided with a commander observation unit separate from the observation unit, wherein the video output of the thermal and visible spectrum video cameras is provided to a display provided with the commander observation unit.

4. The GWS of claim 1 , further comprising a recording device for recording the video outputs of the thermal and visible spectrum video cameras.

5. The GWS of claim 4 , wherein the recording device operates to record the video outputs in a continuous loop.

6. The GWS of claim 1 , wherein the GWS is mounted to the roof of a moving vehicle having a crew compartment, and wherein the operator interface is located in the crew compartment.

7. The GWS of claim 1 , wherein the operator interface displays in addition to the video output at least one of a) operator messages, b) a target reticle, and c) a line of sight.

The GWS of claim 7 , wherein the operator interface displays operator messages in addition to the video output, and wherein the operator messages include at least one of a) identification of the weapon in the weapon cradle; b) a GWS mode of operation; c) azimuth and elevation of the weapon cradle; and d) ammunition type.

9. The GWS of claim 1 , wherein the display of the video output on the operator interface is magnified.
