Abstract

A transparent conductor including a conductive layer coated on a substrate is described. More specifically, the conductive layer comprises a network of nanowires that may be embedded in a matrix. The conductive layer is optically clear, patternable and is suitable as a transparent electrode in visual display devices such as touch screens, liquid crystal displays, plasma display panels and the like.

Claims (22)

1. An optically uniform transparent conductor comprising:

a substrate;

a conductive film on the substrate, the conductive film including a plurality of interconnecting nanostructures, wherein a pattern on the conductive film defines (1) an unetched region having a first resistivity, a first transmission and a first haze and (2) an etched region having a second resistivity, a second transmission and a second haze; and

wherein the etched region is less conductive than the unetched region, a ratio of the first resistivity over the second resistivity is at least 1000; the first transmission differs from the second transmission by less than 5%; and the first haze differs from the second haze by less than 0.5%.

2. The optically uniform transparent conductor of claim 1 wherein a ratio of the first resistivity over the second resistivity is at least 10 5 ; the first transmission differs from the second transmission by less than 0.1%; and the first haze differs from the second haze by less than 0.01%.

3. The optically uniform transparent conductor of claim 1 wherein the nanostructures are silver nanowires.

4. The optically uniform transparent conductor of claim 1 wherein the etched region comprises nanostructures that are broken to shorter segments as compared to the nanostructures of the unetched region.

5. The optically uniform transparent conductor of claim 1 having a transmission of over 90% and a haze of less than 2% in the unetched region.

6. A transparent conductor including: a substrate; and a conductive layer including a first region comprising nanowires embedded in a matrix; and a second region comprising treated nanowires embedded in the matrix, wherein the second region has a higher resistivity than the first region and further wherein the first region and the second region have substantially the same optical properties, wherein the second region is more resistive than the first region by at least about 1500Ω/□.

7. The transparent conductor of claim 6 wherein the nanowires of the first region are metal nanowires.

8. The transparent conductor of claim 7 wherein the treated nanowires of the second region include oxidized metal nanowires.

9. The transparent conductor of claim 7 wherein the treated nanowires of the second region include sulfided metal nanowires.

10. The transparent conductor of claim 6 wherein the treated nanowires of the second region are shorter than the nanowires of the first region.

11. The transparent conductor of claim 6 wherein the second region and the first region have substantially the same optical transmission and haze.

12. A patterned transparent conductor comprising:

a conductive layer on a substrate, the conductive layer comprising a matrix and a network of electrically conductive nanowires embedded therein; and

a treated region of the conductive layer to convert the electrically conductive nanowires within the treated region to less-conductive nanowires, wherein the treated region has a first resistivity and an untreated region having a second resistivity, and wherein the treated region and the untreated region have substantially the same optical properties, wherein the first resistivity in the treated region is higher than the second resistivity of the untreated region by at least about 1500Ω/□.

13. The patterned transparent conductor of claim 12 wherein the conductive layer is optically clear.

14. The patterned transparent conductor of claim 12 wherein the optical properties include optical transmission and haze.

15. The patterned transparent conductor of claim 12 wherein treating the conductive layer comprises chemically transforming the electrically conductive nanowires to electrically insulating nanowires.

16. The patterned transparent conductor of claim 15 wherein treating the conductive layer comprises oxidizing or sulfiding the electrically conductive nanowires.

17. The patterned transparent conductor of claim 12 wherein treating the conductive layer comprises physically shortening the electrically conductive nanowires.
