Abstract

Custom Order Sets for use by doctors and clinicians allow the user to utilize Order Sets and Orderables in clinical encounters. Closed-loop processes and systems for creating a Custom Order Set and using the Order Set to get feedback from Physicians and make modifications to Orderables and Order Sets used in a hospital are described. A Physician can create her own Order Sets and submit them to the hospital for approval. If approved, they can be included in the hospital's Order Sets Library and used by other Physicians. A Physician can create a Framework of Order Sets. A Framework is intended to reflect how the Physician organizes clinical knowledge in her specialty and is intended to match the way the Physician thinks about a Clinical Encounter with a patient. The Physician selects Order Sets from categories within the Framework. These Order Sets are organized or blended together using a detailed process to form a Custom Order Set. A Custom Order Set provides a visual display of Order Sets based on Views and categories and provides various types of information by way of visual markups and text. The Physician can provide Feedback at several levels, such as at the Order Set or Orderable levels or make requests for new content.

Claims (27)

1 . A method of creating a custom order set, the method comprising:

presenting a framework of order sets, wherein the order sets are grouped according to one or more categories, a category being an area relevant to a specialty;

receiving a selection of one or more order sets from the framework;

examining the one or more order sets to determine a specific sequence in which the one or more order sets are presented to a user; and

displaying the one or more order sets to the user in a custom order set having a plurality of visual markups, wherein the custom order set enables the user to view order sets in a more intuitive manner.

2 . A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

deriving a framework using input from physicians, wherein the framework corresponds to a methodology used by physicians in the specialty and shows generally how clinical knowledge in the specialty can be organized.

3 . A method as recited in claim 1 wherein examining the one or more order sets further comprises:

selecting orderables with a specific category;

identifying the framework for the specialty;

sorting the orderables by the framework;

removing duplicate orderables; and

adding visual markup to remaining orderables.

4 . A method of updating an order set library, the method comprising:

creating an order set using pre-defined orderables, new orderables, or both;

submitting the order set to an approval entity; and

receiving either an approval for enterprise-wise usage wherein the order set library is updated, an approval for use by an order set creator only, or a rejection.

5 . A method of automatically modifying an order set, the method comprising:

identifying an order set to be analyzed;

for a specific orderable in the order set, determining a number of times the specific orderable has been used;

determining a number of times the order set has been used;

calculating a usage value of the specific orderable;

comparing the usage value to pre-defined threshold values;

modifying the order set with relation to the specific orderable based on the comparison, wherein the order set is modified without human intervention.

6 . A method as recited in claim 5 wherein calculating a usage value further comprises:

dividing the number of times the specific orderable has been used by the total number of times the order set has been used, deriving a first value;

multiplying the first value by 100 to derive a utilization percentage value.
