Abstract

A crutch having a first side direction, a second side direction opposite the first side direction, a third side direction perpendicular to the first side direction and a fourth side direction opposite the third side direction, the crutch including an elongate leg having a top end, a top portion, a middle portion, a bottom portion, and a bottom end, wherein the elongate leg extends from a saddle to a foot and has a handle disposed on the middle portion, wherein the saddle extends in an elongate shape between the first side direction and the second side direction, wherein the handle extends in an elongate shape between the first side direction and the second side direction, wherein the elongate leg middle portion is to the third side direction of an axis extending between the leg and the foot, wherein the elongate leg middle portion is to the first side direction of an axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the bottom end of the elongate leg; and wherein the handle is cantilevered and has a fixed end and a free end.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus to assist a user in walking, comprising:

a first crutch having a first side direction, a second side direction opposite the first side direction, a third side direction perpendicular to the first side direction and a fourth side direction opposite the third side direction, the crutch comprising:

an elongate leg having a top end, a top portion, a middle portion, a bottom portion, and a bottom end, wherein the elongate leg extends from a saddle to a foot and has a handle disposed on the middle portion;

wherein the saddle has an elongate shape that extends in the first side direction;

wherein the saddle is attached to the top end of the elongate leg;

wherein the elongate leg middle portion is arced and curved and extended outward to the third side direction of an axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the foot;

wherein the elongate leg middle portion is also disposed to the first side direction of an axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the bottom end of the elongate leg; and

wherein the handle is cantilevered and has a fixed end and a free end.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the saddle comprises a frame including a mounting member.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the saddle comprises a resilient frame and a stretchable membrane disposed on the frame.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the resilient frame and the mounting member deflect as weight is loaded onto the saddle such that the saddle widens.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the stretchable membrane is a woven mesh.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a shock absorber mechanism mounted between the top portion of the elongate leg and the saddle, such that the saddle is spaced apart from the top end of the elongate leg.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the shock absorber mechanism includes an upper piece having an upper end mounted to the saddle and a lower piece fixed within the elongate leg;

wherein the upper piece is slidably disposed within the elongate leg and includes a mechanism limiting travel of the upper piece relative to the elongate leg.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , further including a spring captured between the upper piece and the lower piece.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the shock absorber mechanism is pivotably mounted to the saddle.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the saddle is pivotably attached to the elongate leg.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the handle is cantilevered up and has a fixed end attached to the middle portion of the elongate leg and a free end extending outward from the middle portion of the elongate leg, such that when the axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the bottom end of the elongate leg is vertical, the free end of the handle is higher than the fixed end of the handle.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second crutch that is a mirror image of the first crutch.

13. An apparatus to assist a user in walking, comprising:

a first crutch having a first side direction, a second side direction opposite the first side direction, a third side direction perpendicular to the first side direction and a fourth side direction opposite the third side direction, the crutch comprising:

an elongate leg having a top end, a top portion, a middle portion, a bottom portion, and a bottom end, wherein the elongate leg extends from a saddle to a foot and has a handle disposed on the middle portion;

wherein the saddle comprises a frame having an elongate shape that extends in the first side direction, a mounting member, and a resilient mesh disposed on the frame;

wherein the saddle is attached to the top end of the elongate leg; and

a shock absorber mechanism mounted between the top portion of the elongate leg and the saddle, such that the saddle is spaced apart from the top end of the elongate leg;

wherein the elongate leg middle portion is arced and curved and extended outward to the third side direction of an axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the foot;

wherein the elongate leg middle portion is also disposed to the first side direction of an axis extending between the top end of the elongate leg and the bottom end of the elongate leg;

wherein the handle is cantilevered and has a fixed end attached to the middle portion of the elongate leg and a free end extending outward from the middle portion of the elongate leg.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the shock absorber mechanism includes an upper piece having an upper end mounted to the saddle and a lower piece fixed within the elongate leg;

wherein the upper piece is slidably disposed within the elongate leg and includes a mechanism limiting travel of the upper piece relative to the elongate leg.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , further including a spring captured between the upper piece and the lower piece.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the shock absorber mechanism is pivotably mounted to the saddle.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the saddle is pivotably attached to the top end of the elongate leg.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the frame and the mounting member deflect as weight is loaded onto the saddle such that the saddle widens.

19. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a second crutch that is a mirror image of the first crutch.
