Abstract

A cryogenic turbine expander system which consists essentially of a cryogenic liquid pressure vessel, and the vessel further accommodating a turbine expander, an internal bypass configuration, which are operable in parallel, a three-way valve to direct incoming high pressure liquefied gas flow to the turbine expander, or the internal bypass configuration, which further consists a Joule-Thomson valve, when the turbine expander is not operational.

Claims (28)

1. A turbine expander system for processing liquefied gas in a cryogenic environment, the turbine expander system comprising:

a cryogenic liquid pressure vessel in which a turbine expander and an internal bypass configuration are disposed, supported and operable in parallel and maintained in the cryogenic environment therein, the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel further comprising an inlet and an outlet; and

a three-way valve disposed inside the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel, the three-way valve further having one incoming end connected to the inlet, a first outgoing end connected to the turbine expander and a second outgoing end connected to the internal bypass configuration, the three-way valve configured to direct incoming liquefied gas flow to the internal bypass configuration or the expander.

2. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the internal bypass configuration further comprises a Joule-Thomson valve.

3. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the liquefied gas is flammable.

4. The turbine expander system of claim 3 in which the liquefied gas is selected from the group consisting of natural gas, methane, propane, ammonia, ethylene.

5. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel is kept below cryogenic temperatures.

6. The turbine expander system of claim 5 in which the cryogenic temperatures are in an approximate range below 240 K, −24.7° F. or −33.2° C.

7. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the turbine expander is a constant speed liquefied gas expander.

8. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the turbine expander is a variable speed liquefied gas expander.

9. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel is made of stainless steel.

10. The turbine-expander system of claim 1 in which the three-way valve is configured to direct incoming liquefied gas flow to the internal bypass configuration only when the turbine expander is not operational.

11. The turbine-expander system of claim 1 in which the three-way valve is configured to direct all incoming liquefied gas flow to the internal bypass configuration when the turbine expander is not operational.

12. The turbine-expander system of claim 1 in which the three-way valve is configured to direct a predetermined amount of incoming liquefied gas flow to the internal bypass configuration when the turbine expander is not operational at load.

13. The turbine expander system of claim 1 further comprising an external bypass configuration.

14. The turbine expander system of claim 13 in which the external bypass configuration further comprising connecting pipes and a Joule-Thomson valve.

15. The turbine expander system of claim 13 in which the external bypass configuration is configured to direct incoming liquefied gas flow to the external bypass configuration as desired.

16. The turbine expander system of claim 13 in which the external bypass configuration is configured to direct incoming liquefied gas flow to the external bypass configuration only when both the turbine expander and the internal bypass configuration are not operational at the same time.

17. The turbine expander system of claim 13 in which the external bypass configuration is configured to direct incoming liquefied gas flow to the external bypass configuration when either the turbine expander or the internal bypass configuration are not operational.

18. The turbine expander system of claim 13 in which the external bypass configuration is configured to direct all incoming liquefied gas flow to the external bypass configuration only when the both the turbine expander and the internal bypass configuration are not operational at the same time.

19. The turbine expander system of claim 1 in which the turbine expander comprises two separate cryogenic turbine expanders, operable in parallel, in series or individually.

20. The turbine expander system of claim 19 in which the two cryogenic turbine expanders are identical.

21. The turbine expander system of claim 19 in which the two cryogenic turbine expanders are different.

22. The turbine expander system of claim 19 in which the two cryogenic turbine expanders are supported intermediately relative to the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel.

23. A method for reducing loss associated with cryogenic liquefied gas expanders for flammable liquefied gases wherein the liquefied gas expander is mounted inside an explosion-proof stainless steel pressure vessel alongside a liquefied flammable gas bypass system, the gas bypass system comprising a pipe and throttling valve also maintained at cryogenic liquids temperatures for safely handling the flow of flammable liquefied gases when the gas expander is not operational, the improvement comprising the steps of configuring the pipe and valve bypass system inside the stainless steel pressure vessel adjacent the liquefied gas expander such that the entire configuration is maintained at cryogenic liquids temperatures, and further providing a three-way valve adjacent the inlet of the stainless steel pressure vessel to direct the flow either through the expander or through the bypass system.

24. A turbine expander system for processing liquefied gas in a cryogenic environment operated at the optimal performance specification, the turbine expander system comprising:

a cryogenic liquid pressure vessel in which a turbine expander and an internal bypass configuration are disposed, supported and operable in parallel and maintained in the cryogenic environment therein, the cryogenic liquid pressure vessel further comprising an inlet and an outlet; and
