Abstract

The disclosed embodiments relate to a patient monitor for evaluating a patient. The patient monitor may comprise a sensor that is adapted to detect a sound associated with breathing of the patient and to produce a first output indicative of the sound, an oximeter that is adapted to receive an input from the patient and to produce a second output indicative of oxygen saturation of blood of the patient, and a processor adapted to receive at least the first output and the second output and to correlate the first output with the second output.

Claims (44)

1 . A pulse oximeter, comprising:

a probe that is adapted to be attached to a body part of a patient to create a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient; and

a processor that is adapted to receive the signal produced by the probe, to calculate an SPO2 value based on the signal, to detect a plurality of pattern types of SPO2 indicative of pathophysiologic events, and to produce an output indicative of a detected one of the plurality of pattern types.

2 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 1 , comprising a display that is adapted to provide a visual indication corresponding to the output.

3 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 2 , wherein the visual indication comprises a text message.

4 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of pattern types is indicative of a recovery failure.

5 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of pattern types is indicative of a threshold failure.

6 . A pulse oximeter, comprising:

a probe that is adapted to be attached to a body part of a patient to create a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient; and

a processor that is adapted to receive the signal produced by the probe, to calculate an SPO2 value based on the signal, to detect a plurality of cluster pattern types of SPO2, and to produce an output indicative of a plurality of detected cluster pattern types.

7 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 6 , comprising a display that is adapted to provide a visual indication corresponding to the output.

8 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 7 , wherein the visual indication comprises a text message.

9 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 6 , wherein the at least one cluster pattern type is indicative of a recovery failure.

10 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 6 , wherein the at least one of the plurality of pattern types is indicative of a threshold failure.

11 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 6 wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a plurality of sequential severity indices of the at least one cluster pattern type.

12 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 6 , wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a time series of severity indices of the at least one cluster pattern type.

13 . A pulse oximeter, comprising:

a probe that is adapted to be attached to a body part of a patient to create a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient; and

a processor that is adapted to receive the signal produced by the probe, to calculate an SPO2 value based on the signal, to detect a plurality of different cluster pattern types of SPO2, and to produce an output indicative of a detected cluster pattern type.

14 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , comprising a display that is adapted to provide a visual indication corresponding to the output.

15 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 14 , wherein the visual indication comprises a text message.

16 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of cluster pattern types is indicative of a recovery failure.

17 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of cluster pattern types is indicative of a threshold failure.

18 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a plurality of sequential severity indices of at least one of the plurality of cluster pattern types.

19 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a time series of severity indices of at least one of the plurality of cluster pattern types.

20 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein the processor is adapted to determine an indication of severity of the detected cluster pattern type.

21 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein the processor is adapted to display an indication of severity of the detected cluster pattern type.

22 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a plurality of sequential severity indices of the detected cluster pattern type.

23 . The pulse oximeter recited in claim 13 , wherein the processor is adapted to calculate a time series of severity indices of the detected cluster pattern type.

24 . A method of monitoring a patient, comprising:

receiving a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient;

calculating an SPO2 value based on the signal on a processor of a monitor;

detecting a plurality of pattern types of SPO2 indicative of pathophysiologic events; and

producing an output indicative of a detected one of the plurality of pattern types.

25 . A method of monitoring a patient, comprising:

receiving a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient;

calculating an SPO2 value based on the signal on a processor of a monitor;

detecting a plurality of cluster pattern types of SPO2; and

producing an output indicative of a plurality of detected cluster pattern types.

26 . A method of monitoring a patient, comprising:

receiving a signal indicative of an oxygen saturation of blood of the patient;

calculating an SPO2 value based on the signal on a processor of a monitor;

detecting a plurality of different cluster pattern types of SPO2; and

producing an output indicative of a detected cluster pattern type.
