Abstract

A bicycle may include a rear suspension system to absorb forces impacting on the bicycle by allowing a rear wheel of the bicycle to be displaced relative to the bicycle frame. Upon displacement of the rear wheel, the rear suspension system allows the rear wheel to move from a general first position to a second position, and then acts to return the rear wheel to the general first position. The rear suspension system may be adjusted in some versions to affect the travel path of the rear wheel as well as the leverage ratio curve to suit the rider's preference. The bicycle may include a rear frame couple with a front frame through first and second pivot translating assemblies, the orientations and/or shapes of which affect the rear wheel path as well as the leverage ratios.

Claims (21)

1. A bicycle comprising:

a frame; and

a rear suspension system comprising:

at least one swingable member configured for operative association with a rear sprocket assembly;

a link system pivotally connected with the at least one swingable member so as to allow the at least one swingable member to swing;

at least one shock assembly operatively associated with the link system and the frame; and

the link system pivotable relative to, and slideable along, at least one guide member so as to provide a translational pivoting of the at least one swingable member relative to the frame.

2. The bicycle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one swingable member comprises a triangular rear frame.

3. The bicycle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide member comprises a rail.

4. The bicycle of claim 1 , wherein the link system comprises a first link, a second link, and a rocker arm; the first link is pivotally coupled to the at least one swing member and the rocker arm; the second link is pivotally coupled to the rocker arm and the at least one guide member; the rocker arm is pivotally coupled to the at least one shock assembly and to the frame; and the second link is slideable along the at least one guide member.

5. The bicycle of claim 4 , wherein:

the frame comprises:

a top tube;

a head tube connected with the top tube;

a down tube connected with the head tube; and

a seat tube connected with the top tube; and

the at least one guide member is mounted to the frame.

6. The bicycle of claim 4 , wherein the second link is configured to move along a contour of the at least one guide member.

7. The bicycle of claim 1 , further comprising the rear sprocket assembly operatively associated with the at least one swingable member and pivotally associated with a drive sprocket.

8. The bicycle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide member is arcuate.

9. The bicycle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one guide member is linear.
